What is an independent contractor business development professional?

Independent Contractor Business Development professionals are self-employed individuals who help organizations identify new business opportunities, establish client relationships, and drive growth, typically on a contract basis rather than as full-time employees. They may be responsible for lead generation, market research, sales presentations, and negotiating deals. Their flexible, project-based roles allow companies to access business development expertise without a long-term commitment. Independent contractors are responsible for their own taxes and benefits, and often work with multiple clients or industries.

What are some common challenges independent contractor business development professionals face when building client relationships?

Independent contractor business development professionals often encounter challenges such as establishing credibility with new clients, managing multiple client expectations simultaneously, and navigating periods of inconsistent workflow. Since they operate independently, building trust is crucial and requires strong communication and follow-up skills. Additionally, independent contractors must proactively network and market their services to maintain a steady pipeline of opportunities, all while keeping up with administrative tasks without the support of a larger team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an independent contractor in business development, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Independent Contractor in Business Development, you need strong sales acumen, market research ability, and a proven track record in generating leads and closing deals. Familiarity with CRM platforms, digital marketing tools, and relevant industry certifications like Certified Professional Sales Person (CPSP) are often valuable. Outstanding self-motivation, relationship-building, and negotiation skills set top performers apart in this role. These competencies are crucial for driving business growth and succeeding independently in a competitive marketplace.

Job description

Contract Opportunity: Business Development Representative

About NuvelloWeb

NuvelloWeb is a founder-led web design and digital marketing studio based in Los Angeles. We help businesses strengthen their digital presence through thoughtful web design, development, SEO, e-commerce, user experience, and digital marketing.

We built NuvelloWeb in response to the usual agency experience: too many layers, unclear communication, and attractive websites that never become useful business tools. We combine the attention and craftsmanship of a focused studio with the strategy and range needed to support a growing business.

We believe in clear recommendations, direct accountability, and solutions shaped around each clientโ€™s actual goals. As we grow, weโ€™re looking to collaborate with an independent Business Development Representative who can introduce that approach to the right businesses and help us develop lasting client relationships.

About the Engagement

As an independent contractor, youโ€™ll help develop NuvelloWebโ€™s sales pipeline through prospect research, outbound outreach, lead qualification, and appointment setting.

Youโ€™ll have the flexibility to determine when, where, and how you perform the work while coordinating with NuvelloWeb on agreed-upon objectives and maintaining a professional, consistent experience for prospective clients.

What Weโ€™ll Provide

Youโ€™ll have access to resources designed to help you understand and represent NuvelloWeb effectively, including:

โ€ข A growing knowledge base covering our services, positioning, ideal clients, and sales process

โ€ข Outreach messaging, call frameworks, and objection-handling guidance

โ€ข Case studies, portfolio examples, and other sales materials

โ€ข Defined prospecting criteria and lead-qualification standards

โ€ข Access to relevant systems used to coordinate outreach and follow-ups

โ€ข Periodic strategy discussions, feedback, and direct access to the founder

Scope of Work

โ€ข Identify and research qualified prospective clients

โ€ข Conduct outreach through channels such as email, LinkedIn, and cold calling

โ€ข Connect with business owners and other relevant decision-makers

โ€ข Qualify opportunities and develop an understanding of prospectsโ€™ business needs

โ€ข Schedule qualified sales appointments

โ€ข Maintain accurate outreach and follow-up records

โ€ข Test and refine outreach messaging

โ€ข Work toward mutually agreed-upon business development objectives

You May Be a Good Fit If You

โ€ข Have experience with outbound sales, lead generation, or SDR/BDR work

โ€ข Communicate confidently and professionally

โ€ข Are comfortable with cold outreach and handling objections

โ€ข Stay organized and follow up consistently

โ€ข Are motivated by measurable outcomes

โ€ข Can manage your work independently

โ€ข Can represent NuvelloWebโ€™s services clearly and credibly

Experience with LinkedIn Sales Navigator, CRM platforms, email outreach tools, or prospecting databases is a plus.

Engagement: Independent contractor

Location: Remote

Schedule: Flexible and determined by the contractor

Compensation: Commission-based, with additional performance bonuses for reaching and exceeding mutually agreed-upon objectives; no hourly rate or base salary
