Summary

The Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) functions under the supervision of physicians or nurses to provide coordination of admissions, transfers and discharges for patients. The individual is responsible and accountable for complete and accurate processing of information, communicating and collaborating with healthcare team members to facilitate patient care. The Health Unit Coordinator will facilitate the acquisition of materials and assist with clerical activities to support the unit's operations.

Job Description

Acquires information and processes patient related orders and performs other clerical duties to facilitate effective unit operations. Communicates information effectively to team members providing patient care to optimize the team's function and enhance productivity. Coordinates processes associated with admissions, transfers and discharges to ensure proper and effective completion of the patient's care. Collects and distributes medical records as necessary to ensure the proper dissemination of patient care information. Orders and maintains appropriate supply inventory for the unit to provide the unit with adequate levels of materials to be utilized at any time. Coordinates and schedules appointments or procedures to ensure the patient care needs are completed in a timely manner. Regular attendance is required in order to carry out the essential functions of the position. Reviews and meets ongoing competency requirements of the role to maintain the skills, knowledge and abilities to perform, within scope, role specific functions. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Medical terminology course or training preferred.
Must have at least 6 months of healthcare business experience in any of the following areas: Physician practice, unit clerk, hospital or clinic, or 6 months of direct patient care experience. Must have computer experience. Experience working as a Health Unit Coordinator preferred.
