Their work often involves collaboration with design and manufacturing teams to improve product reliability and performance.

What is the difference between Hardware Test Engineer vs Electronics Test Engineer?

AspectHardware Test EngineerElectronics Test Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical, Electronics, or Computer Engineering; certifications like ISTQBBachelor's in Electronics, Electrical Engineering; certifications like ISTQB
Work EnvironmentTesting hardware components, circuit boards, and systems in labs or manufacturingTesting electronic devices, circuits, and embedded systems in labs or production lines
Employer & Industry UsageElectronics manufacturing, hardware development companies, tech firmsElectronics manufacturing, consumer electronics, telecommunications

Both roles focus on testing electronic hardware, but Hardware Test Engineers typically work on entire hardware systems and components, while Electronics Test Engineers often specialize in electronic circuits and embedded systems. The roles overlap in skills and industry usage, making them closely related but distinct in scope.

What are Hardware Test Engineers?

Hardware Test Engineers are professionals responsible for evaluating and verifying the functionality, reliability, and quality of electronic hardware components and systems. They design and execute tests to ensure products meet industry standards and specifications. Their tasks include developing test plans, troubleshooting issues, and working closely with design and manufacturing teams to resolve hardware problems. Hardware Test Engineers play a crucial role in ensuring that electronic products perform as intended before they reach consumers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Hardware Test Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Hardware Test Engineer, you need a solid background in electronics, circuit analysis, and test methodologies, usually supported by a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with test automation tools, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and certifications such as ISTQB or Six Sigma are valuable assets. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork enhance performance in this role. These skills and qualifications are essential to ensure product reliability, troubleshoot issues efficiently, and contribute to high-quality hardware development.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior hardware test engineers with extensive experience, advanced skills in testing methodologies, and certifications can earn salaries approaching or exceeding $300,000 annually, especially in high-cost-of-living areas or within large technology companies. Such roles often require expertise in complex testing environments, automation tools, and cross-disciplinary knowledge in electronics and software integration.

What are some common challenges Hardware Test Engineers face when working on new product prototypes?

Hardware Test Engineers often encounter challenges such as debugging unexpected failures during prototype testing, adapting to rapidly changing design revisions, and balancing thoroughness with tight project deadlines. They may need to quickly develop new test procedures for innovative components and collaborate closely with design, firmware, and manufacturing teams to resolve issues. This dynamic work environment requires strong problem-solving skills and adaptability, as priorities can shift rapidly based on test results and project needs.

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

Highly experienced hardware test engineers working in senior or executive roles at large technology companies can earn $500,000 or more annually, especially with bonuses and stock options. Such roles often require advanced skills in testing methodologies, industry certifications, and extensive industry experience.

How much does a test engineer get paid?

A hardware test engineer's salary typically ranges from $60,000 to $100,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced engineers with specialized skills or certifications can earn higher salaries. Compensation often includes benefits such as health insurance and paid time off.

Description
Position at EVgo
About EVgo:
EVgo (Nasdaq: EVGO) is one of the nation's largest public fast charging networks for electric vehicles. Our mission is to expedite the mass adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) by creating a convenient, reliable, and affordable EV charging network that delivers fast charging to everyone. EVgo's owned and operated charging network is growing rapidly. We partner with multiple stakeholders including automakers; fleet and rideshare operators; retail hosts such as grocery stores, shopping centers, restaurants, gas stations, and more to make our vision of Electric for All a reality. The EV industry is one of the fastest growing industries in the country. Join us as we charge forward into an all-electric future.
Position Summary:
The Senior Test Engineer is responsible for executing verification and validation testing for vehicle DC fast charging components and charging systems. This role ensures hardware and software meet defined performance, reliability, and compliance requirements prior to product release.
The role spans development and validation testing at both component and system levels, including displays, low-voltage electronics, and three-phase high-voltage power electronics.
The Senior Hardware Test Engineer owns the end-to-end execution of component lifecycle testing - from defining test equipment and building test infrastructure to executing test campaigns, analyzing data, and reporting results. This role plays a critical part in ensuring product quality and deployment readiness. The role requires strong debugging instincts, curiosity, and the ability to translate ambiguous test failures into actionable engineering insight.
This is a highly hands-on role requiring significant laboratory work, hardware integration, and development of automated and manual test systems.
Responsibilities:
  • Execute verification and validation testing at component, subsystem, and system levels.
  • Implement test cases derived from system validation plans in collaboration with Validation Engineers.
  • Design and deploy test stages including hardware setup, instrumentation, and data acquisition systems.
  • Configure and operate test equipment including power supplies, electronic loads, oscilloscopes, and environmental chambers.
  • Design and fabricate test fixtures and automated or manual test setups.
  • Develop and maintain automated test scripts and data collection tools.
  • Execute environmental, durability, electrical, and functional test campaigns.
  • Analyze test results and conduct post-test reviews to communicate findings and recommendations.
  • Instrument systems to capture electrical, thermal, and mechanical measurements.
  • Manage test assets including hardware configuration, equipment calibration, software versions, and test documentation.
  • Support root cause investigations and failure analysis during test campaigns.
  • Collaborate with design, reliability, manufacturing, and supplier teams to resolve issues and improve system performance.
  • Provide technical guidance to technicians supporting test execution.
  • Deploy and maintain electrical integration test benches for evaluation of motors, pumps, cables, and connector systems.

Qualifications:
  • Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 3 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD without experience; or equivalent work experience.

Desired Skills:
  • Experience developing and executing structured test protocols.
  • Hands-on experience testing hardware and software from component to system levels.
  • Strong capability in hardware test setup, execution, and error-proofing.
  • Proficiency with lab instrumentation including power supplies, electronic loads, oscilloscopes, function generators, and DAQ systems.
  • Experience with SCPI or similar interfaces for automated test control.
  • Programming experience in Python, SQL, or similar tools for automation, data analysis, and visualization.
  • Experience designing test fixtures and selecting appropriate test equipment.
  • Strong documentation and reporting skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
