As of Jun 6, 2026, the average hourly pay for product test engineer in the United States is $36.59, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $25.00 and $43.75 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

How does a Product Test Engineer typically collaborate with design and manufacturing teams during the product development cycle?

Product Test Engineers play a crucial role in bridging the gap between design and manufacturing teams. They work closely with designers to understand product specifications and provide feedback on testability and reliability concerns. During the manufacturing phase, they coordinate with production teams to implement testing procedures and troubleshoot issues that arise during pilot runs. This collaborative approach ensures that quality standards are met and that any design or process improvements are communicated effectively to all stakeholders.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Product Test Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Product Test Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, quality assurance, and test methodology, typically with a degree in electrical, mechanical, or computer engineering. Familiarity with automated testing tools, lab measurement equipment, and software such as LabVIEW or MATLAB is commonly required, along with relevant certifications like ISTQB. Strong problem-solving, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills set exceptional candidates apart. These skills ensure reliable product performance, efficient troubleshooting, and clear collaboration with design and development teams.

What does a Product Test Engineer do?

A Product Test Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and conducting tests to ensure that products meet quality and safety standards. They work closely with product development teams to identify potential issues, develop test plans, and analyze test results. Their role often involves troubleshooting, documenting defects, and recommending improvements to enhance product performance and reliability.

What is the difference between Product Test Engineer vs Quality Assurance Tester?

AspectProduct Test EngineerQuality Assurance Tester
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in engineering, computer science, or related field; certifications like ISTQB are commonOften requires similar certifications like ISTQB; educational background varies
Work EnvironmentWorks closely with development teams, involved in testing new products and features during developmentFocuses on testing existing products to ensure quality before release, often in dedicated QA teams
Industry UsageCommon in tech, manufacturing, and electronics industriesWidely used across software, hardware, and manufacturing sectors

Product Test Engineers and Quality Assurance Testers both focus on testing, but Product Test Engineers are more involved in testing during product development, while QA Testers focus on verifying product quality before release. The roles often overlap, but their primary responsibilities and work phases differ.

Its primary mission is to define and develop full chip verification and validation content to enable leading ATE manufacturing capability with world-class cost and quality levels for all new products at Lattice.Product Test Engineers are involved in the early feasibility stage of product development to assure proper planning for both Design for Test and Design for Manufacturability. Test planning also involves the selection and or development of the test equipment to be used in Manufacturing to achieve cost and quality goals. Product Test Engineering develops all ATE full chip verification tests prior to tape out and then validates the yield and performance of the product over temperature, voltage and wafer process variation. Test coverage goals, metrics, fault grading, and test coverage are critical activities of PTE. Product Test Engineering develops and transfers a complete manufacturing solution to Lattice's worldwide Operations Group.Product Test Engineering needs innovative and high energy individuals to execute the tasks required to meet our objectives. The job develops very broad knowledge, and technical skill sets in the semiconductor industry as it is involved in every stage of product development. Thus, candidates need to possess the ability to acquire new skills and expertise rapidly.
