Position Description
The School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Texas State University invites applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor of Practice in Public Relations to begin fall 2026. Successful candidates will share their industry experience with a creative community of students to prepare them for employment in strategic communication positions.
We are committed to hiring an accomplished, passionate, practicing public relations professional. The successful candidate will teach classes primarily at our Round Rock campus but also our San Marcos campus and online. The candidate will participate and represent the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at university events and student organizations at the Round Rock campus.
Required Qualifications
Required of Both Ranks
  • Successful teaching experience at the university level.
  • A graduate degree in Journalism, Strategic Communication, Business Administration, Public Relations, Digital Media Communications, AI/Data Science, or a related field.
  • Expertise to teach various public relations, strategic communication and mass communication courses at the undergraduate and graduate level.

Required for Assistant Rank:
  • Documents a minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience beyond entry level in a full-time industry: corporation, organization, professional practice. Demonstrates competence in contemporary public relations practice in one or more of the following areas: global communication strategy, strategic communication, client management and leadership, communication campaign development, media relations, and crisis communication.

Required of Associate Rank:
  • Documents a minimum of 10 years of relevant professional experience beyond entry level in a full-time industry: corporation, organization, professional practice (including freelance).
  • Demonstrated professional engagement through participation in, and/or presentations at, industry/professional conferences, or similar contributions to the discipline via solid, consistent work and presentations with nationally recognized organizations and brands.
  • Leadership/management within the public relations industry including oversight of employees/freelancers, consistent relationship building with key client constituencies or stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Accredited in Public Relations (APR)
  • Leadership positions in professional associations, recognition by peers or awards for contributions to the profession and/or industry.
