What is full time captioning?

Full time captioning refers to the role of creating real-time or pre-recorded captions for audio and video content as a full-time job. Captioners listen to spoken words and transcribe them accurately so that the content is accessible to people who are deaf or hard of hearing, or for viewers who prefer written text. This work can involve live television broadcasts, online videos, webinars, and classroom lectures. Full time captioners often use specialized software and may work in-house or remotely. The job requires excellent listening skills, fast and accurate typing, and a strong command of grammar and spelling.

What are some common challenges faced by full-time captioners, and how can they be managed on the job?

Full-time captioners often encounter challenges such as maintaining accuracy and speed, especially during live broadcasts or events with fast-paced dialogue. Managing background noise, multiple speakers, and technical jargon can also increase the complexity of the work. To address these challenges, many captioners rely on specialized software, continuous training, and close collaboration with audio engineers and content producers. Effective time management and regular breaks can also help maintain focus and prevent burnout in this detail-oriented role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Full Time Captioner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Time Captioner, you need excellent listening skills, fast and accurate typing abilities, and a strong command of grammar and spelling, typically supported by a relevant degree or experience in transcription or language services. Familiarity with captioning software, audio editing tools, and sometimes certification such as Certified CART Provider or Certified Broadcast Captioner can be valuable. Attention to detail, time management, and the ability to focus for extended periods are crucial soft skills in this role. These skills ensure that captions are precise, timely, and accessible, directly supporting viewers who rely on accurate text representation of audio content.
