Job description

Overview
Buildings & General Service at the State of Vermont is seeking a BGS Utility Mechanic to be responsible for the maintenance of the grounds and grounds equipment at the Vermont State Police Academy and The Vermont State Fire Training Academy, both located in Pittsford. This position may also require assisting building mechanics with light building maintenance and assisting with some custodial duties.
Duties may include but not limited to:
  • Mowing of lawns using lawn tractors, zero turn mowers, and push mowers.
  • Using trimmers
  • Using handheld lawn tools such as rakes, shovels, etc.
  • Routine maintenance of lawn equipment
  • Maintaining mulch/flower beds keeping them free of weeds
  • Occasionally assisting building mechanics, specialist, and custodians with projects

This is a temporary position that will end on 9/19/26, but can end earlier if the applicant can no longer work for reasons such as returning to school. It is 40 hours a week Monday through Friday from 6:30 to 3:00. Minimum age for applicants is 16. Applicants must be able to pass a background check.
Who May Apply
This position, BGS Utility Mechanic - Temporary (Job Requisition #54906), is open to all State employees and external applicants. This is a temporary position. Temporary work is typically for variable hours and is not expected to be full-time. The State does not guarantee 40 hours of work per week.

Environmental Factors
Duties are performed at state buildings, and may include correctional facilities, where contact with inmates may be anticipated. Incumbents may encounter harassment or hostile behavior and must be able to respond in a calm and professional manner. Must be able to climb ladders, lift weights up to 75 pounds, and work in cramped, wet, or poorly ventilated areas. Plumbing repairs often entail exposure to raw sewage, for which protective clothing must be worn. Work in all types of weather should be anticipated. May require possession of a valid driver's license. May require emergency response to calls outside of regular work hours. Some potential for physical injury may be present.
Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a one year vocational/technical training program in building trades, mechanical repair, or closely related field.
OR
One (1) year or more in building repair and maintenance work.
OR
Two (2) years of building custodial work at an independent level that involves experience with equipment.
Special Requirements
Some positions in this class may require a valid driver's license and/or own transportation for travel between work sites.
A criminal record check and/or child abuse registry check may be required for some positions within this class based on the locations where duties are to be performed.
