Job description

About McCracken

McCracken partners with CEOs, owners, and investors to elevate the Office of the CFO—bringing both strategic and operational finance leadership to growth, transition, and special project environments.

We are building an evergreen bench of experienced Fractional Controllers across the U.S. to support founder-led, investor-backed, and mission-driven organizations.

What you’ll do

You will step in as a hands-on finance and accounting leader, ensuring accuracy, discipline, and operational excellence across the finance function.

  • Own and manage the monthly close process, ensuring timely, accurate financial reporting
  • Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including GL, AP/AR, payroll, and reconciliations
  • Establish and maintain internal controls, policies, and procedures
  • Prepare and deliver financial statements and reporting packages for leadership
  • Partner with CFOs and leadership teams on budgets, forecasts, and variance analysis
  • Drive process improvements to increase efficiency, visibility, and scalability
  • Support audit readiness, compliance, and external reporting requirements
  • Lead or support systems implementations and clean-up projects (ERP, reporting tools)
  • Manage and mentor accounting staff or serve as the primary accounting lead in lean environments

The exact scope, cadence, and on-site expectations vary by client and engagement.

Who you are

This network is designed for experienced accounting leaders who thrive in hands-on, execution-focused roles and want to build a flexible portfolio of client engagements.

  • 5–10 years of progressive accounting/finance experience
  • Experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, or senior accounting leader
  • Strong command of GAAP and financial reporting
  • Proven ability to own the close process and produce accurate, timely financials
  • Detail-oriented with a strong controls mindset and operational rigor
  • Comfortable working independently in fast-paced, evolving environments
  • Ability to partner effectively with CFOs, CEOs, and operators

Nice to have:
Industry experience (especially manufacturing, inventory, or professional services), audit background, ERP implementations, and CPA. You are comfortable stepping into new environments, quickly assessing needs, and delivering structure and clarity where it’s needed most.

Why McCracken’s network is different

High-caliber finance operators have options; this is built to respect your time, expertise, and flexibility.

  • No long-term commitment required — maintain the freedom to pursue opportunities independently
  • Flexible fractional work aligned to your availability and preferred engagement style
  • Variety of clients, industries, and project types (from clean-up and stabilization to ongoing controller roles)
  • Collaboration with experienced CFOs and finance leaders across engagements
  • Central team support that scopes and frames engagements so you can focus on execution and impact

This is not a single role; it is an ongoing relationship with McCracken for consideration of current and future fractional Controller engagements.
