Principal Associate, Executive Compensation
The Executive Compensation team is a small but mighty team that supports all compensation programs for our most senior executives. We are committed to designing compensation programs that attract, retain, and motivate senior executives and align executive contributions with the business objectives needed to drive long-term success. Our team is responsible for designing and implementing all senior executive compensation programs with close partnership between Corporate Compensation, Equity, Legal, Incentive Risk Management, HR Business Partners, and more.
We work in a collaborative environment where one's contributions are recognized, successes are elevated and effort is rewarded. We are continuously looking at how we can simplify, automate, and seamlessly deliver on our executive compensation programs.
Capital One is looking for a Principal Associate, Compensation to join our Executive Compensation team. The ideal candidate for this role should exhibit strong communication, attention to detail, and a foundational interest in researching market practices and evaluating pay programs to provide data-driven recommendations.
Roles and Responsibilities
  • Perform deep analysis on designing and implementing competitive executive compensation programs through benchmarking, market research, etc.
  • Lead annual processes such as benchmarking, compensation focal cycles, etc.
  • Consult on compensation matters with Human Resources Business Partners
  • Research and formulate recommendations on external and internal employment offers, job leveling, and compensation programs through the use of surveys and internal compensation tools
  • Lead ad-hoc and recurring analytical projects such as compression studies, pay cliff analyses, etc.
  • Create internal and client-facing tools to further enhance the simplicity and transparency of our programs
  • Partner with cross functional teams to deliver against business intent

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree or military experience
  • At least 3 years of experience in Compensation or at least 3 years of experience in Finance or at least 3 years of experience in Analytics, or a combination
  • At least 2 years of experience in Excel or Google Sheets

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in Accounting, Statistics, Business Administration, Economics, Finance, or Human Resources
  • Certified Compensation Professional (CCP)
  • 5+ years of experience in Executive Compensation or Corporate Compensation or 5+ years of experience in Finance or 5+ years of experience in Analytics, or a combination
  • 5+ years of experience building compensation models and conducting pay analysis
  • 2+ year of experience with Workday
  • 2+ year of experience with Proxy Statement creation
  • Advanced Excel or Google Sheets skills (e.g., financial modeling, array functions)
  • Knowledge of human resources and compensation including knowledge of relevant Federal, State, Local laws/regulations relating to compensation
  • Experience with benchmarking tools (BetterComp) or reporting tools (Tableau, Snowflake)

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.
McLean, VA: $131,300 - $149,800 for Prin Assoc, Compensation
Richmond, VA: $119,400 - $136,200 for Prin Assoc, Compensation
Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate's offer letter.
This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
