Job description

Library Clerk

Performs a wide variety of entry level clerical support work; provides access to library materials for the staff and the public. The following tasks are essential for this position. Incumbents in this classification may not perform all of these tasks, or may perform similar related tasks not listed here.

Retrieve and check out library material for the public; renew materials by phone and in-person.

Data entry, paperwork filing, calling patrons regarding items on hold, and related clerical tasks.

Process and prepare books/periodicals/newspapers for introduction into the library's collection.

Retrieve materials from outdoor and indoor drop boxes; check in materials and prepare them for return to collection.

Return library materials to the shelves in alphabetical and/or numerical order.

Conduct shelf searches for materials designated lost and/or missing to verify their status.

Inspect and mend books and other materials in the collection.

Collect overdue fines and lost/damaged item fees.

Register new patrons, issue new and replacement library cards.

Help maintain neatness and organization in the public and staff areas.

Answer the telephone and route calls to appropriate destination.

Perform other related work as required.

Minimum Knowledge, Skill and Ability

Knowledge of:

Standard library procedures.

Basic arithmetic, English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Basic office methods and library practices/procedures.

Skill and Ability to:

Lift books and push heavy book trucks.

Locate materials within a library.

Perform a variety of library clerical work with speed and accuracy.

Operate computer and keyboard.

Work with the public and as part of a team environment.

Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Training and Experience

High School diploma or equivalent required. Clerical and customer service experience desired.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Requires vision (which may be corrected) to read small print.

Requires the mobility to stand, stoop, reach and bend.

Requires mobility of arms to reach and dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate small objects.

Requires the ability to stand for long periods.

Library environment; work closely with the public; work with computer and office equipment.

May be required to work evenings and/or weekends.

Requires the ability to lift, push, and/or pull items which might exceed 50 pounds.

Requires working on both Saturdays and Sundays.
