What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry Level Doctor, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Doctor, you need a medical degree (MD or DO), completion of a residency program, and a valid medical license. Proficiency with diagnostic tools, electronic health records (EHR) systems, and basic clinical procedures is essential. Strong communication, empathy, and decision-making skills help you build trust with patients and collaborate effectively with healthcare teams. These competencies are crucial for delivering safe, high-quality patient care and successfully transitioning from training to independent practice.

What are some common challenges faced by entry-level doctors during their first year, and how can they be managed?

Entry-level doctors, often in their intern or residency year, frequently encounter challenges such as managing heavy workloads, adapting to night shifts, and dealing with high-stress situations. Balancing clinical responsibilities with ongoing learning and documentation can be overwhelming. Building strong communication skills, seeking support from senior colleagues, and prioritizing self-care are essential strategies for managing these challenges. Many hospitals also offer structured mentorship programs and regular feedback sessions to help new doctors adjust and grow in their roles.

What are entry level doctors?

Entry level doctors are medical professionals who have recently graduated from medical school and are in the early stages of their medical careers. They are often referred to as interns, foundation doctors, or residents, depending on the country. These doctors work under supervision, gaining practical experience in diagnosing and treating patients while learning from more experienced physicians. Entry level doctors rotate through various medical specialties to build a broad foundation of clinical skills. Their responsibilities typically include taking patient histories, performing basic examinations, and assisting with procedures.

Common Search & ComparisonEntry Level Doctor vs Medical Assistant

While both roles are vital in healthcare, an Entry Level Doctor requires extensive education, licensing, and clinical training, working directly with patients in medical diagnosis and treatment. In contrast, a Medical Assistant supports healthcare providers through administrative tasks and basic clinical duties, often with less formal education. Understanding these differences helps clarify career paths and expectations in the healthcare industry.

Job description

Daemen University is a dynamic, independent, liberal arts institution committed to excellence in student centered learning. The University places special emphasis on preparing students for excellence in professional life, civic engagement, and on instilling and understanding that learning is an exciting lifelong journey. Students are encouraged to be creative, innovative, ethically minded leaders for an ever-changing, diverse, and interconnected world.
The Mission of Daemen University is to prepare students for life and leadership in an increasingly diverse and complex world through the integration of education and professional preparation. Daemen University is going beyond instrumental needs to foster the development of individuals who are dedicated to the health and well-being of local and global communities.
About This Opportunity
Within the Scott Bieler College of Health Professions, Daemen University offers an entry level Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree program. The DPT curriculum is a 6 year, 3+3 program. Students may apply to the Bachelor of Science in Natural Science/DPT program as freshmen or transfers. Students already possessing a baccalaureate degree may apply directly to the professional phase of the curriculum. The Physical Therapy Department is currently comprised of 12 highly motivated core faculty members engaged in a variety of clinical, service, and scholarly activities with a common goal of providing an outstanding educational experience for our students. Programs and activities are available to mentor junior faculty in pedagogy and scholarship. External clinical practice opportunities exist locally across all clinical practice settings. Daemen University provides a dynamic academic environment that fosters strong collaborative and inter-professional efforts within the University and local medical community. Our Scott Bieler College of Health Professions building provides state of the art lecture and laboratory facilities dedicated for our PT students in all clinical practice settings. In Fall 2020, we opened the Center for Interprofessional Learning and Simulation and just recently expanded the footprint to include a simulated ICU hospital room that includes a high-fidelity manikin and 10 point-of-care ultrasound units. Standardized patients are also regularly utilized across numerous courses in our curriculum. In the spring of 2025, we opened a state-of-the-art rehabilitation facility - the Kennedy Institute for Mobility Innovation & Technology - that will offer access to leading robotic devices and assistive technology to restore motion and function following a range of injuries and illnesses. This center will become Western New York's most comprehensive advanced rehabilitation facility of its kind in the region.
Required Qualifications
Daemen University invites applications for a full-time, 12-month, tenure track faculty position in the Physical Therapy Department starting on 08 September 2026. The preferred candidate for this position would have expertise in neuromuscular physical therapy. In addition, the preferred candidate will have completed their academic doctorate (e.g., PhD, EdD, DHSc) in physical therapy or a related field, hold an advanced specialty certification (e.g., PCS, NCS, GCS) and be eligible for PT licensure in New York State. Candidates may be considered if they are near completion of their academic doctorate. Candidates without an academic doctorate who have a DPT degree and advanced specialty certification (as noted above) may also be considered. Previous teaching experience and evidence of scholarship are strongly preferred. Contingent upon expertise and interest, additional teaching opportunities may include neurobiology and prosthetics/orthotics, as well as mentoring students in patient care experiences on-campus and in clinical research. Non-teaching responsibilities would include student academic advising, participating in departmental and university-wide committees, clinical practice, and ongoing scholarly productivity within a related field. Opportunities for internal funding to establish and strengthen research projects are available on a competitive basis.
Applications should include a cover letter of application, statement of teaching philosophy, curriculum vitae, and three references with contact information.
