What is an engine builder?

Engine builders are skilled technicians who specialize in assembling, modifying, and repairing engines for various vehicles, such as cars, motorcycles, boats, or aircraft. They work with both standard and high-performance engines, ensuring that each component is properly fitted and functions optimally. Their responsibilities often include diagnosing engine issues, rebuilding worn parts, and tuning engines for efficiency and power. Engine builders typically work in automotive shops, racing teams, or manufacturing facilities. Strong mechanical knowledge and attention to detail are essential for success in this role.

What does an engine builder do?

The job duties of an engine builder involve working to design, build, improve, assemble, and test engines. In this career, you usually work in the automotive industry, though you could also design engines for aerospace, manufacturing, or a variety of other industries. Your duties as an engine builder may include engine teardown and rebuilding, as well as creating new engines. Your employer may also expect you to work on a specific aspect of an auto design project, such as the transmission. In some positions, you may add components and inspect engines to ensure proper functionality.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an engine builder, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Engine Builder, you need in-depth mechanical knowledge, precision machining skills, and hands-on experience with engine assembly or repair, often supported by a technical diploma or apprenticeship. Familiarity with tools such as torque wrenches, micrometers, and diagnostic software, as well as certifications like ASE, are highly valued. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and strong organizational skills help set top performers apart in this role. These capabilities are essential for building reliable, high-performance engines and ensuring safety and customer satisfaction.

What are some common challenges engine builders face during the assembly process, and how can they be addressed?

Engine builders often encounter challenges such as precise component fitting, diagnosing subtle defects in parts, and maintaining strict cleanliness to prevent contamination. To address these, attention to detail, use of specialized measurement tools, and adherence to clean workspace practices are essential. Collaborating with machinists and engineers can also help resolve technical issues quickly, ensuring engines meet performance and reliability standards.

Job description

About Engine
Engine is the all-in-one travel and spend management platform trusted by 38K+ businesses and groups representing 1.8M+ travelers. We're the retailer and the rails of business travel, the fastest-growing company in travel tech, built on a decade of proprietary technology, supply, and pricing no one else can replicate. Other travel and AI companies run on our infrastructure to book real trips, hold rates, and move payments, without building any of it themselves. We built it, AI-forward at every layer, from how travelers book to how the rails run.
That work has earned recognition as one of Fast Company's Best Workplaces for Innovators (2025), TravelTech's Reservation Platform of the Year (2026), and one of Built In's Best Places to Work (2020-2026).
We're looking for bold, ambitious people to help redefine how businesses manage and experience travel. Working here, you can expect exponential growth, an ambitious pace, full ownership, and high-caliber colleagues who push you to do the best work of your career. Every hire raises the bar.
Come outpace the ordinary and build the future of travel with us.
Your Mission
As part of the Engine team, you'll help drive the growth of our card product, one of the biggest bets in shaping Engine's identity as a Fintech company. This role sits at the forefront of getting customers into the card experience, with a crisp north star that makes winning easy to see. Engine has done the hard work on travel, offering perks that competitors can't match because of our supply side relationships, and this is a product market fit opportunity waiting to be scaled. Here's what you'll take charge of:
  • Own the growth product roadmap for the card: Shape the product experiences that bring customers into the card and get them to first use. Own onboarding, activation flows, in product prompts, and the surfaces that turn interest into adoption.
  • Drive conversion and activation across the funnel: Move the metrics that matter, from first touch through activation and repeat use. Design and ship experiments across the product, learn fast, and compound wins into a repeatable growth motion.
  • Shape the card experience for new and activating customers: Partner with the broader card team to make sure the earliest moments of the product feel great. Identify friction, prioritize the highest leverage fixes, and ship them.
  • Partner with cross functional teams: Work closely with engineering, design, data, and marketing to ship quickly, learn quickly, and hold a high bar for craft.

What You'll Bring to Engine
We're looking for someone ready to shape one of the most consequential bets at Engine:
  • Experience: Minimum 8 years in product management, with a strong track record as a growth or activation PM on consumer or prosumer products. You've owned a funnel through product levers and moved it. Fintech experience, particularly in card products, is a strong plus.
  • Experimentation chops: You've run a lot of product experiments and know how to design them well. You're comfortable in test and learn environments, reading data critically, and knowing when to trust a result versus when to dig deeper.
  • Product and growth instincts: You understand how product levers drive growth outcomes. You can spot the highest leverage bets across onboarding, activation, and engagement, and go after them without waiting for perfect information.
  • Judgment: You have conviction and aren't a pushover. You can tell an engineer or a stakeholder "no" and explain why. You help make hard prioritization calls and stand behind them.
  • Hunger and agency: You take ownership of ambiguous problems and drive them to clarity. You're motivated by being early to something big and by seeing the tangible impact of your work quickly.

Applications for this role will be accepted through 11/5/2026 or until the role is filled. We encourage you to apply early, as we may begin reviewing applications before the deadline.
Compensation
Our compensation packages are based on several factors, including your experience, expertise, and location. In addition to a competitive base salary, total compensation may include equity and/or variable pay (OTE). Your recruiter will share your complete compensation package as you move through the process.
Base Pay Range
$181,400-$251,000 USD
The Engine Edge: Perks & CompensationWe believe in rewarding great work with great benefits:
  • Compensation: Competitive base pay tied to role and experience, with opportunities for bonuses, commissions, and equity.
  • Benefits: Check out our full list at engine.com/culture.
  • Environments for Success: Different roles have different needs in terms of the environments that drive success which is why we have a hybrid-hub model. Whether you are in one of our amazing offices or fully remote, we'll make sure you have what you need to succeed.

Perks and benefits may vary based on employment type, location, and more.
