What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the Engineering Technologist 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
The Automation, Robotics, and Controls (E-3) group seeks a skilled individual with experience in the development and realization of electrical designs, including the creation of wiring diagrams, electrical schematics, and component layouts. As part of E-3, you will provide critical support for engineering teams with expertise in electrical and controls applications. Your primary role will involve working with end users to design, fabricate, and deploy a wide variety of control and data acquisition systems to support the LANL mission.
The ideal candidate for this role has a passion for creating, modifying, and managing electrical schematics, panel layouts, and wiring diagrams. Additionally, we are seeking a candidate who has demonstrated hands-on experience developing electrical drawing packages and completing the cycle of concept-prototype-final product fabrication/assembly.
In E-3, we pride ourselves on an open and collaborative environment where we work in multidisciplinary teams to meet our goals. Some work will be conducted in a radiological area.
Engineering Technologist 1 ($87,800 - $143,000)
  • As an Engineering Technologist 1 your responsibilities would include:
  • Apply technical knowledge to generate control systems and documentation from limited requirements.
  • Assist in instrumentation and control systems design, development, troubleshooting, and production.
  • Prepare, review, and document technical information including circuit and cabling diagrams and schematics.
  • Assist with fabrication of various parts including printed circuit boards, cables, and enclosures.
  • Generate and review electrical drawings for accuracy, completeness, and standardization.
  • Develop and update electrical schematics, panel layouts, and wiring diagrams primarily in AutoCAD Electrical and/or Altium Designer
  • Work closely with other technical staff to translate markups and designs into accurate technical drawings.
  • Maintain CAD libraries and incorporate drawing standards across multiple projects.
  • Perform drawing audits and support drawing revision control
  • Assist in bill of material generation, documentation, and procurement.
  • Manage drawing approval and review workflows in coordination with system design reviews

Engineering Technologist 2 ($96,600 - $158,000)
  • In addition to what was outlined above, an Engineering Technologist 2 responsibilities include:
  • Contribute to improving the groups' capabilities and workflow.
  • Contribute to the planning, coordination, and preparation of equipment or work specifications.
  • Apply knowledge of electrical drafting software (AutoCAD Electrical/Altium Designer/Siemens Xpedition)
  • Apply knowledge of industrial control software (Rockwell Automation/Siemens/National Instruments Embedded Controllers).

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 2 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree and 5 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
In addition to the minimum job requirements, candidates with expanded qualifications in any of the following areas are viewed favorably:

  • Experience with AUTODESK AutoCAD Electrical and AUTODESK Vault, Altium Designer and/or Siemens Xpedition

Work Location : The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment:
Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law.
