Instrumentation and Electrical Engineering Technologist

As an Instrumentation and Electrical Engineering Technologist you’ll be at the forefront of our innovation, driving specialty chemical solutions forward. You’ll collaborate with a diverse group of passionate individuals to deliver sustainable solutions to advance mobility, improve wellbeing, and enhance modern life.

The Instrumentation and Electrical (I&E) Engineering Technologist is responsible for providing technical expertise to plant Operations and Maintenance for site instrumentation, control systems (DCS, PLC, SIS), and electrical infrastructure. This includes hardware and software maintenance, user‑interface modifications, preventive maintenance, documentation upkeep, and process control operational assistance. The role ensures safe and reliable operation of automation and electrical systems while minimizing downtime and maximizing availability.

Responsibilities
  • Provide 24/7 on‑call support for all instrumentation, electrical, and control systems issues beyond the capability of the site I&E technicians and respond promptly to minimize plant downtime.
  • Perform periodic health checks and preventative maintenance on control system (e.g. DeltaV) hardware, operator workstations, network switches, network backbone, and PLC components.
  • Assist Operations & Maintenance Departments with questions and troubleshooting requiring technical expertise, e.g. loop troubleshooting, interlock questions, electrical component failures, maintenance job plan technical input, etc.
  • Participate in checkout, commissioning, and startup activities for projects, expansions, and modifications, including instrumentation setup, VFD programming, electrical checkouts, etc.
  • Implement small‑scale automation and electrical changes for the Engineering Department including control and graphic configurations.
  • Assist the Training Coordinator in Operator training activities as part of electrical and control system projects.
  • Provide input to Technical Object Updater (TOU) and Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) Coordinator for management of control system and instrumentation spare parts, including SAP functional locations, bills of materials, and preventive maintenance records.
  • Assist plant Engineers and Designers in creating site instrumentation standards, logic documentation, P&IDs, loop drawings, interlock and alarm lists, single‑line diagrams, motor control schematics, panelboard schedules, electrical hazard labeling, etc., and ensure they are kept up to date.
  • Provide technical information for and participate in process hazard assessments and root cause investigations and support corrective actions.
  • Work with plant Process Control Engineer to install DeltaV hotfixes, Windows updates, and perform database cleans; support engineers with field equipment during version upgrades.
  • Collaborate with Global Engineering, Procurement, and Lubrizol Electrical and Automation Communities to align with best practices.
  • Ensure compliance with mechanical integrity programs (inspection/testing of interlocks, alarms, SIS).
  • Support automation security programs including secure remote access and alarm management.
  • Support the Asset Management System (AMS) for maintenance and reliability functions.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology, electrical preferred
  • High school diploma or equivalent with 12+ years of experience as a maintenance or engineering technician focusing on instrumentation within a chemical plant.
  • Experience working hands‑on with instrumentation such as pressure, level, temperature, flow sensors, and control valves.
  • Electrical systems up to 480 V including relays, motor starters, and VFDs.
  • Automation systems including PLCs, DCS, HMIs, etc.; DeltaV strongly preferred.
  • Programming languages used in automation, e.g. Function Block, Ladder Logic.
  • Programming software and tools for instrumentation, e.g. faceplate parameter selection, computer‑based, HART protocol, etc.
  • Industry codes and standards, e.g. NFPA 70, 70B, and 70E.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Computerized Maintenance Management Software (CMMS).
  • Experience with SAP.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD.

  • Standing, walking, or operating equipment for extended periods.
  • Working in a lab or manufacturing setting with appropriate PPE provided.
  • Use of computers and digital tools in an office or hybrid environment.
