These positions often require advanced technical skills, certifications, and experience in health information systems, with salaries varying based on location and organization size.

What are EHR Developers?

EHR Developers are professionals who design, build, implement, and maintain Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems used in healthcare organizations. They work with healthcare providers to understand clinical workflows and ensure that EHR systems are user-friendly, secure, and compliant with regulations. EHR Developers typically have expertise in software development, healthcare data standards, and integration with other healthcare technologies. Their work helps improve patient care by ensuring accurate and efficient electronic management of health information.

How hard is it to build an EHR?

Building an EHR as a developer involves complex software design, understanding healthcare workflows, and ensuring compliance with regulations like HIPAA. It requires proficiency in programming languages, database management, and often collaboration with healthcare professionals. The process can be time-consuming and technically demanding, especially for custom or large-scale systems.

To thrive as an EHR Developer, you need strong programming skills (such as Java, .NET, or Python), knowledge of healthcare data standards (like HL7 and FHIR), and typically a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with EHR platforms (such as Epic or Cerner), database management systems, and relevant certifications like Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CPHIMS) are valuable. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are crucial soft skills in this role. These competencies are essential for building secure, interoperable, and user-friendly EHR systems that support efficient healthcare delivery.

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

Senior software engineers, especially those working in high-demand fields like artificial intelligence, cloud computing, or at major tech companies, can earn $500,000 or more annually. Achieving this level typically requires extensive experience, advanced skills, and often stock options or bonuses as part of compensation packages.

What are some common challenges faced by EHR Developers when integrating new features into existing healthcare systems?

EHR Developers often encounter challenges such as dealing with legacy code, ensuring compatibility with multiple healthcare standards (like HL7 or FHIR), and maintaining strict data security and privacy requirements. Collaboration with clinical staff is essential to ensure new features meet real-world needs, which can require frequent iterations and clear communication. Additionally, EHR Developers must be prepared to troubleshoot interoperability issues between different modules and external healthcare applications.

The Opportunity:

Homecare Homebase is seeking a visionary, execution-focused Vice President of EHR & AI Product to lead the next generation of our core EHR platform-spanning Intake, Capacity Logistics, Care Coordination, and Revenue Cycle Management (RCM).

As the general manager and portfolio architect for HCHB's EHR business line, you will directly connect enterprise strategy to growth, profitability, and modernization outcomes. Your mandate: deliver end-to-end strategy, execution, and performance for the EHR portfolio, harnessing AI to reduce clinician burden, improve care coordination, and drive financial performance, all while upholding trust with clinicians, patients, payers, and regulators.

You will lead a team of experienced product leaders and work cross-functionally to translate strategy into durable product and business results. As a key member of the product leadership team, you will be a transformational leader and market-facing voice for EHR & AI, helping HCHB maintain and extend its position as the market leader in home-based care.

What You Will Do:EHR & AI Product Leadership
  • Define and drive EHR and AI strategy, roadmap, and priorities-linking directly to revenue, retention, margin, and clinical impact.

  • Architect a cohesive EHR-AI strategy, specifying where and how AI augments documentation, decision support, scheduling, utilization management, authorizations, denial prevention, and coding.

  • Translate market and regulatory shifts (value-based care, Medicare Advantage, interoperability) into a 3-5 year portfolio vision.

  • Modernize legacy systems while pursuing bold innovations like ambient documentation and AI copilots for clinicians and back-office teams.

  • Lead build/buy/partner decisions for AI products, selecting the right technology and data partners.

AI, Data, and Safety by Design
  • Partner with Architecture and Security to ensure robust data pipelines, model lifecycle management, and governance.

  • Set guardrails for compliant, safe AI-ensuring privacy, auditability, and content safety in clinical and financial workflows.

  • Establish success measures for AI features, and foster continuous improvement through real-world user feedback.

  • Champion responsible AI practices with clients and internal stakeholders, educating them on opportunities, limitations, and safeguards.

Product Execution & Operational Excellence
  • Drive prioritization, cross-functional alignment, and rapid learning across Intake, Capacity Logistics, Care Coordination, and RCM.

  • Foster a high-velocity operating cadence through OKRs, quarterly planning, and structured reviews that link strategy to outcome.

  • Instill operational rigor in backlog management, release readiness, and legacy module lifecycle.

Team Leadership & Talent Development
  • Build and coach a diverse, high-performing team of Directors and Senior PMs.

  • Clarify team roles, develop P&L mindset among product leaders, and foster psychological safety, succession, and accountability.

Cross-Functional Influence and Stakeholder Management
  • Partner with Engineering and UX to ensure high-quality, high-velocity delivery of EHR and AI capabilities that meaningfully improve clinician workflow, staff efficiency, and financial performance.

  • Work closely with Sales, Marketing, and Client Success to ensure crisp positioning, pricing/packaging, and launch programs that drive adoption and renewal.

  • Serve as a key face of the EHR & AI portfolio with strategic customers, prospects, and partners-translating roadmap and strategy into a compelling, credible story.

  • Help Product act as a unifying force across HCHB, especially where EHR, data, operations, and AI intersect, breaking down silos and aligning decision-making.

  • Engage with executive peers to align investment decisions, resolve conflicts, and keep the organization focused on what matters most.

Market, Customer, and Regulatory Insight
  • Maintain a systems-level understanding of home health, hospice, and personal care operations by staying close to clinicians, field staff, back-office users, and agency leaders to deeply understand pain points and test concepts before and after launch.

  • Stay ahead of regulatory and payer trends (CMS rules, MA and risk adjustment, value-based care, interoperability, and emerging AI guidance) and adjust strategy accordingly.

  • Oversee competitive intelligence, win/loss analysis, and market segmentation, ensuring our EHR & AI offerings remain differentiated, defensible, and aligned to customer segments.

What You Will Bring:
  • 12+ years of progressive product management experience, with at least 5+ years leading product teams and 3+ years in a senior or executive product leadership role (e.g., VP, Head of Product, or equivalent).

  • Deep experience with enterprise software; strong preference for EHR, healthcare workflow, RCM, or adjacent clinical/financial platforms.

  • Demonstrated success owning a major product portfolio or business line with clear business outcomes (e.g., ARR, retention, NPS, margin, or similar).

  • Strong technical proficiency with AI/ML, including familiarity with concepts such as LLMs, retrieval, model evaluation, and guardrails; able to partner deeply with Engineering leaders and make informed trade-offs.

  • A track record of modernizing or transforming legacy platforms-introducing new experiences and architectures while maintaining reliability, performance, and compliance.

  • Clear strengths as a P&L-minded general manager: comfortable with pricing and packaging, business cases, and balancing growth investments with operational and technical constraints.

  • High EQ with a coaching-oriented leadership style; experienced in building healthy cultures and teams in environments navigating change or recovery from burnout.

  • Proven ability to navigate ambiguity, drive alignment, and lead through complex, cross-functional decisions, including in politically sensitive or high-stakes contexts.

  • Strategic fluency in payer/provider economics (Medicare Advantage, value-based care, risk-sharing models, authorizations, denials) strongly preferred.

  • Experience with build vs. buy decisions, partner integrations, and ecosystem strategy in a regulated or complex domain.

  • Familiarity with Agile/Lean product practices and modern product lifecycle tools.
