What are EHR Developers?

EHR Developers are professionals who design, build, implement, and maintain Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems used in healthcare organizations. They work with healthcare providers to understand clinical workflows and ensure that EHR systems are user-friendly, secure, and compliant with regulations. EHR Developers typically have expertise in software development, healthcare data standards, and integration with other healthcare technologies. Their work helps improve patient care by ensuring accurate and efficient electronic management of health information.

What is the difference between Ehr Developer vs EHR Analyst?

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an EHR Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an EHR Developer, you need strong programming skills (such as Java, .NET, or Python), knowledge of healthcare data standards (like HL7 and FHIR), and typically a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with EHR platforms (such as Epic or Cerner), database management systems, and relevant certifications like Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CPHIMS) are valuable. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are crucial soft skills in this role. These competencies are essential for building secure, interoperable, and user-friendly EHR systems that support efficient healthcare delivery.

What are some common challenges faced by EHR Developers when integrating new features into existing healthcare systems?

EHR Developers often encounter challenges such as dealing with legacy code, ensuring compatibility with multiple healthcare standards (like HL7 or FHIR), and maintaining strict data security and privacy requirements. Collaboration with clinical staff is essential to ensure new features meet real-world needs, which can require frequent iterations and clear communication. Additionally, EHR Developers must be prepared to troubleshoot interoperability issues between different modules and external healthcare applications.

Rapid Software Developer (Full-Stack)

Location: Southfield, MI (On-Site)
Employment Type: Full-Time

Build Technology That Solves Real Healthcare Problems

At EPIC Health, we believe technology should accelerate innovation, eliminate inefficiencies, and improve patient care. We're looking for a Rapid Software Developer who enjoys building solutions from the ground up and can quickly turn ideas into production-ready applications.

This is a hands-on, full-stack development roleโ€”not a traditional software engineering position with long development cycles. You'll work directly with operational and clinical leaders to rapidly design, develop, test, and deploy custom software that improves workflows across our growing healthcare organization.

The ideal candidate has experience building modern web applications using technologies such as Python, Django, Flask, JavaScript, React, HTML/CSS, SQL, APIs, and cloud-based platforms, and enjoys solving complex business problems through technology.

What You'll DoFull-Stack Application Development
  • Design, develop, test, and deploy full-stack web applications that improve operational efficiency.
  • Build internal portals, dashboards, workflow tools, and business applications using modern development frameworks.
  • Develop rapid prototypes and minimum viable products (MVPs) that can quickly be tested and refined.
  • Write clean, scalable, maintainable, and well-documented code.
Backend Development
  • Develop secure backend applications using Python, Django, Flask, or similar frameworks.
  • Design and maintain RESTful APIs and backend services.
  • Build integrations between internal systems, databases, EHR platforms, CRM systems, and third-party applications.
  • Optimize application performance, security, and scalability.
Front-End Development
  • Build responsive, user-friendly interfaces using JavaScript, HTML5, CSS3, and modern front-end frameworks (React, Vue, Angular, or similar).
  • Create intuitive dashboards and operational tools that improve the user experience.
  • Ensure applications function across multiple devices and browsers.
Database & Integrations
  • Design and maintain SQL databases and data models.
  • Develop API integrations and automate data exchange between platforms.
  • Work with cloud-based services, authentication, and data security best practices.
Automation & Process Improvement
  • Build automation tools that eliminate manual work and improve productivity.
  • Collaborate with operations and clinical teams to identify technology solutions for business challenges.
  • Continuously improve applications based on user feedback and operational needs.
Testing & Deployment
  • Perform unit testing, debugging, troubleshooting, and application maintenance.
  • Participate in version control, code reviews, and deployment processes.
  • Maintain technical documentation and support ongoing application enhancements.

What You BringRequired Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or related field (or equivalent practical experience).
  • 3+ years of full-stack software development experience.
  • Experience developing web applications from concept through deployment.
  • Strong understanding of object-oriented programming and software design principles.
Technical Skills

Experience with several of the following:

  • Python
  • Django
  • Flask
  • JavaScript (ES6+)
  • HTML5 & CSS3
  • React, Vue.js, Angular, or similar front-end frameworks
  • SQL (SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, or similar)
  • REST APIs and API integrations
  • Git/version control
  • Cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud)
  • Authentication, security, and web application best practices
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience building healthcare or healthcare-related software.
  • Familiarity with EHR platforms such as Athenahealth, Epic, eClinicalWorks, or similar.
  • Experience with workflow automation and AI-powered development tools.
  • Knowledge of Agile/Scrum development methodologies.
  • Experience working in fast-paced startup or high-growth environments.

Skills & Competencies
  • Strong full-stack development skills.
  • Builder mindset with a bias toward execution.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to rapidly move from concept to deployment.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Comfortable managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Passion for learning new technologies and solving real-world business challenges.

Why Join EPIC Health?
  • Build software that directly impacts patient care and healthcare operations.
  • Work closely with executive leadership and operational teams on high-impact projects.
  • Opportunity to rapidly develop and deploy innovative solutions in a fast-growing healthcare organization.
  • Collaborative, entrepreneurial, and innovation-driven culture.
  • Professional growth and advancement opportunities.

What We Offer
  • Competitive compensation
  • Medical, Dental, and Vision Insurance
  • 401(k) Retirement Plan
  • Paid Time Off and Holiday Pay
  • Professional development and continued learning opportunities
  • Supportive, collaborative, and mission-driven work environment
