This is a unique succession-planning opportunity for an accounting professional looking to take the next step in their career.

The company's long-tenured Controller plans to retire within the next year, and they are seeking someone who can learn the business from the ground up before transitioning into a leadership role. Rather than stepping directly into a Controller position, you'll spend your first phase immersed in the day-to-day accounting functions that drive the business, gaining a deep understanding of operations, financial processes, systems, and industry-specific accounting practices.

As your knowledge and responsibilities grow, you'll work closely with the current Controller to develop the skills and business insight necessary to eventually assume oversight of the company's accounting and financial operations.

What You'll Do

Initially, you'll focus on core accounting responsibilities, including:

  • Maintaining and reconciling general ledger accounts
  • Assisting with month-end close activities and financial reporting
  • Reviewing and coding invoices and supporting accounts payable processes
  • Reconciling bank accounts and financial records
  • Supporting audits and gathering financial documentation
  • Assisting with tax filings and compliance reporting
  • Collaborating with internal departments and external vendors to resolve discrepancies
  • Learning company systems, processes, and operational workflows

As you progress, you'll gain exposure to broader financial and leadership responsibilities such as:

  • Financial statement preparation and analysis
  • Cash flow and banking management
  • Budgeting and forecasting support
  • Internal controls and accounting policy development
  • Audit and compliance oversight
  • Financial reporting for ownership and leadership teams
  • Strategic business planning and operational decision support

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred
  • 3+ years of progressive accounting experience
  • Strong understanding of general ledger accounting, reconciliations, and month-end close
  • Advanced Excel skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • High attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to learn complex business operations and financial processes
  • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative approach
  • Interest in long-term career growth into an accounting leadership position

Why This Role Stands Out

  • Clearly defined path to future Controller responsibilities
  • Direct mentorship from an experienced, long-tenured Controller
  • Opportunity to learn the business before assuming leadership
  • Stable, successful company with strong employee retention
  • Collaborative, team-oriented culture
  • Chance to make a long-term impact on the organization

The Environment

  • Fully onsite
  • Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM
  • Open-office environment with a close-knit team
  • Fast-paced but supportive culture
  • Leadership that values training, development, and long-term growth

This role is ideal for an accounting professional who enjoys rolling up their sleeves, learning the operational side of a business, and building toward a future leadership opportunity.
