A development director is responsible for fundraising strategies and initiatives to help promote the business and operations of nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, and hospitals. As a development director, your job duties include reaching out to potential benefactors, maintaining relationships with existing donors, devising new strategies for fundraising, and organizing fundraising events. These events may consist of benefit concerts, dinners, parties, and special events. Collaborating with company management is also a regular part of your job. Depending on the organization, your exact duties may vary.
| Aspect | Development Director | Fundraising Manager |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Focus | Oversees overall fundraising strategies, donor relations, and development initiatives | Executes specific fundraising campaigns and manages donor outreach |
| Responsibilities | Strategic planning, team leadership, major gift cultivation | Event planning, donor communication, campaign execution |
| Credentials | Bachelor’s or Master’s in Nonprofit Management, Fundraising, or related fields; experience in leadership roles | Bachelor’s degree; experience in fundraising or development roles often preferred |
| Work Environment | Nonprofit organizations, charities, educational institutions | Nonprofit organizations, charities, fundraising agencies |
The Development Director typically holds a strategic leadership role, overseeing the entire development department and long-term fundraising goals. In contrast, the Fundraising Manager focuses on executing specific campaigns and managing day-to-day donor activities. Both roles require similar credentials and work in similar environments, but the Development Director has broader responsibilities and higher-level oversight.

Repair the World mobilizes Jews and their communities to take action to pursue a just world igniting a lifelong commitment to service. We believe that service in support of social change is vital to a flourishing Jewish community and an inspired Jewish life. By 2030, Repair will catalyze one million acts of service toward repairing the world.
Repair is building a national Jewish service movement. We mobilize young adults to serve in their communities, catalyze service through deep partnerships within Jewish communal organizations, and inspire people to take action through time-bound thematic national service campaigns. Our mission provides volunteers with an increased connection to meaningful service and learning as a Jewish value, builds capacity for nonprofit partners to meet their missions, and deepens connections across lines of difference.
Position OverviewAre you a relationship-driven fundraiser who thrives in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment? Repair the World is seeking an experienced frontline fundraiser to serve as Development Director for our San Francisco Bay Area and Chicago communities.
In this role, you will lead all fundraising efforts across both markets, managing a portfolio of individual donors, foundations, federations, and corporate partners while actively identifying and securing new philanthropic investment. You will serve as the primary development presence in two of Repair's most dynamic communities, partnering closely with local Repair the World staff and lay leaders.
As part of a national seven-person development team, you will be supported by centralized infrastructure, including grant writing, prospect research, database management, and development operations. This structure enables you to focus primarily on frontline fundraising and donor engagement. You will collaborate regularly with senior leadership, the C-suite, and members of the board of directors, and serve as the primary staff partner to the Bay Area and Chicago chairs of the Solel Collective, Repair's major giving initiative for donors contributing $10,000 or more annually.
This full-time, exempt position reports to the Senior Director of Development. The Bay Area represents a significant opportunity for growth, with a strong and expansive Jewish philanthropic community. Given this potential, candidates must be located in the San Francisco Bay Area; candidates outside this area will not be considered. Travel to Chicago, approximately once per month, will be required to cultivate and steward donor relationships.
Position ResponsibilitiesFundraising and Revenue Generation
Major Donor Engagement: The Solel Collective
The Solel Collective is Repair the World's primary major gifts initiative and a key driver of individual giving growth in both markets.
Donor Engagement and Community Presence
Strategy, Planning, and Internal Partnership
We know that you may not have all the skills listed. We encourage you to apply even if you only check some of the boxes.
Compensation at Repair the World is based on the salary band for the role and cost of living for the location. The starting salary for this full-time exempt role is $125,000 - $150,000. Benefits package includes paid time off for service in addition to vacation, sick time, personal days and holidays. Employer covers 100% of full-time employee's health premiums (medical/dental/vision) for most plans and 50% for dependents. Additional benefits include, retirement matching, professional development funds, employer-paid short and long term disability coverage plus access to the Jewish Learning Collaborative and our Economic Access Fund.
