This is a critical management role in Active Implantable Systems (AIS) R&D leading a high performing team responsible for the system-level design of active implantable devices serving Cardiac Rhythm Management (CRM) and Urology divisions.

In AIS R&D, we are dedicated to advancing innovative technologies that improve patient outcomes and quality of life through implantable devices and therapies. As the Senior Manager of Systems Design, you will provide people and technical leadership to a team of engineers and direct the day-to-day work of the implantable systems development function. This team’s primary activities are to help define high valued products for the business, create system requirements and design, and partner with various R&D functions to develop these products. 

This role is highly cross-functional both inside and outside of AIS R&D as the Implantable Systems Design team is the primary technical point of contact for the Marketing, Regulatory, Technical Services, Medical Safety, Quality, and Clinicals organizations. Success will require strong technical judgment, a track record of efficiently developing high-quality medical devices across the product lifecycle, and the ability to build trusted relationships with direct reports, cross-functional partners, and senior leaders.

Work Model, Sponsorship, Relocation:

At Boston Scientific, we value collaboration and synergy. This role follows an on-site work model requiring employees to be in our Arden Hills, Minnesota office at least four days per week. Boston Scientific will not offer sponsorship or take over sponsorship of an employment visa for this position. Your responsibilities will include:

• Ensuring high-quality deliverables for technical projects of significant scope and maintaining technical excellence across product and technology development activities.
• Leading technology integration and knowledge transfer within the area of responsibility and driving the development of department tools and methodologies.
• Demonstrating effective change leadership.
• Guiding teams through technical challenges, escalations, and trade-off decisions while maintaining focus on patient needs, product quality, and business objectives.
• Providing technical leadership and governance across the product lifecycle, ensuring compliance with applicable design control and quality system requirements and procedures while monitoring relevant industry trends.
• Building strategic partnerships across AIS and the broader Boston Scientific network to further departmental and organizational objectives.
• Developing and monitoring department budgets, partnering with functional leads and program managers to determine appropriate project resource plans and development schedules, and adjusting spend and/or staffing as necessary to position teams for success.
• Presenting project and technical updates and strategic recommendations to senior leadership and providing clear communication to stakeholders at key milestones.
• Developing project investment proposals and business cases as needed.
• Keeping the organization's vision and values at the forefront of decision making and actions.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, biomedical engineering or related field.
• Minimum of 10 years' relevant experience with a bachelor’s degree or 8 years' relevant experience with a master’s degree.
• Minimum of 3 years' experience leading a technical engineering group.
• Established success leading technical teams, managing complex projects, and delivering results in integration or new product development settings.
• Ability to communicate technical issues and risks clearly, concisely, and transparently across all organizational levels.
• Demonstrated effectiveness in collaborating across functions, influencing without direct authority, and enabling highly effective teams.
• Proven track record of developing medical technology from early-stage development through full product launch and sustaining activities.
• Experience in a regulated industry.
• Knowledge of systems engineering methods and tools (e.g., architecture, modeling, product line engineering).
• Proficiency in design controls with particular focus on user needs, intended use, system requirements, system design, and traceability.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Background in implantable device development.
• Knowledge of CRM systems and products (i.e., ICDs, pacemakers, CRTs, diagnostic devices, programmers, etc.).
• Understanding of regulatory expectations for medical device product approvals.
• Proven success in building strong partnerships with cross-functional teams within and outside of product development.
• Experience working with global R&D teams.
• Demonstrated ability to prioritize resource needs across competing projects.
• Track record of leading change management initiatives.
• Familiarity with Lean/Agile concepts including scrums, burnups, retrospectives, backlog, and minimizing WIP.
• Desire to understand clinical needs and engage with physician customers.
• Strong personal drive, individual accountability, and bias for action.

Maximum Salary: $239000 

The anticipated compensation listed above and the value of core and optional employee benefits offered by Boston Scientific (BSC) – see www.bscbenefitsconnect.com—will vary based on actual location of the position and other pertinent factors considered in determining actual compensation for the role. Compensation will be commensurate with demonstrable level of experience and training, pertinent education including licensure and certifications, among other relevant business or organizational needs. At BSC, it is not typical for an individual to be hired near the bottom or top of the anticipated salary range listed above.

Compensation for non-exempt (hourly), non-sales roles may also include variable compensation from time to time (e.g., any overtime and shift differential) and annual bonus target (subject to plan eligibility and other requirements).
