Job description

Position Summary

The AVP, Cyber Underwriter is responsible for driving profitable growth within the cyber insurance portfolio through disciplined underwriting, strong broker relationships, and effective risk selection. This role focuses on evaluating complex cyber risks, developing tailored coverage solutions, and expanding market presence within the retail distribution channel.
The position plays a key role in executing underwriting strategy, maintaining portfolio profitability (P&L), and identifying new business opportunities in targeted industries.

What will your job entail?

Key Responsibilities

Underwriting & Risk Management

  • Evaluate, select, and price complex cyber risks in alignment with underwriting guidelines and authority
  • Develop customized insurance solutions based on client exposures and risk profiles
  • Analyze submissions, financials, loss data, and cyber risk controls
  • Ensure pricing adequacy, coverage structure, and profitability targets are met

Business Development & Broker Management

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with retail brokers and agency partners
  • Identify new business opportunities and grow a profitable book of cyber business
  • Manage the full underwriting lifecycle: submission, quote, negotiation, and binding
  • Participate in RFPs and broker presentations

Portfolio Strategy & Growth

  • Contribute to the execution of cyber underwriting strategy and portfolio management
  • Monitor and manage P&L within assigned underwriting authority
  • Identify trends, emerging risks, and market opportunities in cyber insurance
  • Support cross-selling opportunities across other specialty lines

Collaboration & Leadership

  • Partner with internal teams including claims, actuarial, legal, and compliance
  • Ensure adherence to underwriting guidelines, regulatory requirements, and audit standards
  • Mentor and support junior underwriting staff as needed

Innovation & Process Improvement

  • Leverage data, analytics, and technology to improve underwriting decisions
  • Support use of automation and AI tools to enhance efficiency and risk assessment
  • Continuously improve underwriting processes and best practices

Qualifications

Experience

  • 7-12+ years of underwriting experience, with a focus on cyber, technology E&O, or specialty lines
  • Proven track record of building and managing a profitable book of business
  • Experience working with retail brokers in the NYC or Northeast market preferred

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Risk Management, Business, Finance, or related field required
  • Advanced degree (MBA, MS) preferred but not required

Licenses & Certifications

  • Active Property & Casualty (P&C) license required
  • Surplus Lines license preferred
  • Industry designations such as CPCU, RPLU, or AU are a plus

The target salary range for this position is $168,000.00 - $210,000.00 annually.
