Job Purpose

The Community Cook assists in preparing meals in a safe and appetizing manner in compliance with dietary standards and food-related Community policies and procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Cleans, cuts, prepares, and cooks meat, fish, or poultry to a safe temperature.
  • Prepares and cooks various items according to menus, special dietary or nutritional requirements, or numbers of portions to be served.
  • Bakes breads, rolls, and pastries.
  • Portions and serves food to residents, guests and team members.
  • Washes cooking equipment such as pots, pans, dishes, utensils, and other pieces.
  • Inventories supplies and equipment.
  • Determines, or assists in determining meals and menus.
  • Ensures the cleanliness and functional operation of galley equipment, kitchen appliances, and work areas by routinely cleaning and inspecting each piece.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Proven cooking experience, including experience as a line chef, restaurant cook or prep cook
  • Excellent understanding of various cooking methods, ingredients, equipment, and procedures
  • Basic understanding of food handling techniques, preparation, and cooking procedures.
  • Must be able to work quickly and efficiently.
  • Must be able to work well as part of a team.
  • Must be able to work well under pressure.
  • Ability to maintain personal cleanliness.
  • Culinary school diploma preferred.

Working Conditions

This position works in a fast-paced kitchen with exposure to heat, flames, cold temperatures, slippery floors and sharp cooking tools. The Cook may work in close contact with others. The Cook must comply with food safety regulations, which include appropriate clothing and protective gear such as hairnets, masks, disposable gloves and slip-resistant shoes.
