What is a Cook 2?

A Cook 2 is a culinary professional who typically works under the supervision of a head chef or sous chef and is responsible for preparing, cooking, and presenting food in a restaurant or food service setting. This role is often considered an intermediate position, requiring more experience and skill than an entry-level cook (Cook 1). Cook 2s may be assigned to specific stations, follow recipes, ensure food safety standards, and assist in training junior kitchen staff. They play a key role in maintaining kitchen operations and delivering consistent, high-quality dishes to customers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Cook 2?

To thrive as a Cook 2, you need solid culinary skills, a good understanding of food safety, and prior experience in a professional kitchen. Familiarity with commercial kitchen equipment, inventory systems, and possibly a food handler certification are typically required. Attention to detail, teamwork, and the ability to work efficiently under pressure are standout soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure consistent food quality, compliance with safety standards, and smooth kitchen operations.

What are the typical opportunities for skill development and career progression as a Cook 2?
