Job description

We are looking for a Controller to lead the accounting function and deliver dependable financial reporting for our McLean, Virginia team. This role will oversee core accounting activities, strengthen internal controls, and ensure accurate, timely close cycles across the organization. The ideal candidate brings strong technical accounting expertise, sound judgment, and the ability to improve processes that support better financial visibility and operational discipline.
Responsibilities:
• Direct monthly, quarterly, and annual close activities to ensure complete and accurate results are delivered on schedule.
• Prepare financial statements and management reports that provide clear, reliable insight into company performance.
• Manage daily accounting operations across payables, receivables, billing, payroll support, general ledger maintenance, and account reconciliations.
• Review journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, and other close deliverables to confirm accuracy and proper period recognition.
• Ensure project financial data, including revenue activity, job costs, and related reporting, aligns with the general ledger.
• Coach and oversee accounting team members, setting clear expectations for quality, accountability, and deadline management.
• Enhance project accounting processes by improving billing procedures, labor distribution, expense classification, and data consistency.
• Drive more effective use of Deltek Vantagepoint to support project setup, billing workflows, reporting visibility, and financial control.
• Develop and refine internal controls, documentation, and standardized procedures that reduce risk and create sustainable accounting practices.
• Lead audit readiness efforts and support tax filings, compliance reporting, and the accounting treatment of complex or unusual transactions.

• Proven experience leading corporate accounting operations and overseeing full-cycle financial close processes.

• Strong knowledge of financial statement preparation, general ledger management, and account reconciliation practices.

• Experience supervising accounting staff and building a high-accountability team environment.

• Demonstrated ability to improve internal controls, standardize workflows, and document repeatable financial processes.

• Familiarity with project-based accounting, including billing, cost tracking, revenue reporting, and job-level financial analysis.

• Ability to evaluate and apply appropriate accounting guidance for non-routine or complex transactions.

• Experience supporting external audits, compliance obligations, and regulatory reporting requirements.

• Proficiency with accounting systems and enterprise financial tools, with experience in Deltek Vantagepoint strongly preferred.
