About NOW CFO NOW CFO is an outsourced accounting and finance firm. We give businesses financial clarity and visibility through experienced consultants, engaged for exactly the hours they need. Our consultants step into complex environments, get up to speed quickly, and deliver as trusted members of the client's team.

About the Engagement We're partnering with an established nonprofit organization in the San Diego area on an urgent interim Controller engagement. The organization operates in the behavioral health and human services space.

What You'll Do

  • Own and maintain the monthly and year-end close process with GAAP-compliant financial reporting
  • Manage reconciliations, internal controls, and cash management activities
  • Oversee accounting for government contracts, grants, and restricted funding, including nonprofit revenue recognition, cost allocations, and reimbursement activity
  • Lead financial statement, retirement plan, government, grant, and contract-related audits
  • Coordinate support for Form 990 preparation
  • Manage and critically review the work of an established five-person accounting team while staying hands-on with detailed accounting issues
  • Partner with auditors, program leaders, the Board, and Finance Committee
  • Keep the accounting function stable and steady throughout the leadership transition

What You Bring

  • Substantial nonprofit accounting experience, ideally within behavioral health, human services, healthcare, or another government-funded organization
  • Controller, Assistant Controller, Accounting Director, or comparable leadership experience
  • Hands-on experience with government contracts, grants, restricted funding, cost allocations, and reimbursement activity
  • Strong ownership of monthly and year-end close, GAAP financial reporting, reconciliations, internal controls, and cash management
  • Experience leading audits (financial statement, retirement plan, government, grant, or contract-related) and coordinating Form 990 support
  • Ability to lead a team while still rolling up your sleeves on detailed work
  • Confidence operating independently and partnering with senior stakeholders
