Job description

St. Camillus parish is seeking a part-time Parish Sacristan to assist and support the communal prayer of those coming to worship. The Sacristan role is highly visible and provides a welcoming presence in and around the church while overseeing the total operation of the sacristies and coordination of volunteer sacristans within the Church. The Sacristan reports to the Pastor of St. Camillus Church and performs pre- and post-mass duties in support of the priest who will officiate at mass or other sacramental events. The Sacristan coordinates with the officiating priest to ensure that necessary items for masses, baptisms, funerals, weddings, and other special events that are in place in advance of the service to keep an emphasis on the solemnity of the occasion. The incumbent may meet with parishioners and visitors in the course of these preparations and provides information and referrals for follow up and scheduling in response to parishioners and visitors’ questions.

Duties / Responsibilities

  • Ensures that the facility is open one hour after any services celebrated in the Church, Chapel, or on some occasions in the Parish Hall both weekdays and weekends; ensuring that all liturgical vessels, hosts, wine, altar linens and printed materials are in their place.
  • Ensures that all church lights and sound system are active in advance of any services.
  • When required, the Sacristan ensures that the baptismal font, wedding kneelers and chairs needed, are properly located on the altars; the incumbent may work with volunteers to move the equipment into place.
  • Prepares and sets in place all lectionary and sacramentary materials.
  • Ensures that the correct chasuble and stole is clean and ready for the celebrant.
  • Ensures that the song sheets, bulleting and related paper materials are available for distribution and ready after the mass or service.
  • Upon the conclusion of the mass or service the incumbent purifies and cleans the vessel used and secures them in storage. With the assistance of volunteers, the Sacristan returns all other materials to their respective storage locations.
  • Coordinates with volunteers to launder and press the church linens; in the absence of volunteers the Sacristan completes this task.
  • Polishes candle stands and cleans holy water fonts; removes spent flowers and plants and maintains the shrines in the church. That includes votive candle replacements and cleaning of the small bases.
  • Responsible for the security of keys, and locks doors and cabinets upon the conclusion of church events.
  • Participates in meetings with church staff and the pastoral team as requested.
  • Performs other church related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Excellent knowledge of the Roman Catholic faith.

Excellent verbal communication skills and knowledge of church processes.

Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

Strong sense of responsibility and reliability with proven ability to be on-time.

Ability to work weekends, a couple of hours on weekdays, and some evenings.

Education Experience:

High School diploma or equivalent required.

Work Environment / Physical Requirements:

The work is performed in the church property, The Father Graces Chapel and in the sacristy of both worship spaces.

Prolonged periods of standing, walking and carrying materials.

Must be able to lift 25 pounds at times.
