What is a Book Proofreading job?

A Book Proofreading job involves reviewing a manuscript to identify and correct errors in grammar, punctuation, spelling, and formatting before publication. Proofreaders ensure the text is polished, consistent, and adheres to the publisher's style guidelines. Unlike editing, which focuses on content and structure, proofreading is the final step to catch minor mistakes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Book Proofreading position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Book Proofreader, you need exceptional attention to detail, a strong command of grammar and language usage, and familiarity with various style guides, typically supported by a degree in English or a related field. Experience with word processing and document editing tools such as Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat, or specialized proofreading software is highly beneficial. Excellent time management, communication skills, and the ability to work independently or as part of a publishing team help set a candidate apart. These skills and qualities are essential to ensuring text accuracy, consistency, and readiness for publication in a deadline-driven environment.

How do I get a job proofreading books?

To get a job proofreading books, develop strong language and grammar skills, gain experience through freelance projects or internships, and build a portfolio. Many proofreaders use editing tools like Microsoft Word or Grammarly and may pursue certifications such as the Editorial Freelancers Association certification to enhance credibility.

How do I become a book proofreader?

To become a book proofreader, you should develop strong language and grammar skills, often through a degree or certification in editing or proofreading. Gaining experience with editing tools and building a portfolio can help, and many proofreaders work freelance or for publishing companies, often requiring attention to detail and knowledge of style guides like the Chicago Manual of Style.

What are some of the common challenges faced by book proofreaders?

Book proofreaders often face challenges such as tight deadlines, maintaining concentration during long or repetitive projects, and ensuring consistency across various sections or editions of a manuscript. Balancing thoroughness with efficiency is crucial, as even minor errors can significantly impact the quality and professionalism of the final publication. Additionally, proofreaders may need to navigate differing editorial preferences or style guides, depending on the client or publisher. Staying organized and adaptable helps proofreaders deliver accurate, polished work under varying project conditions.

What qualifications do I need to become a proofreader?

To become a proofreader, strong language skills, excellent attention to detail, and a good understanding of grammar and style are essential. Many employers prefer candidates with a bachelor's degree in English, journalism, or a related field, and familiarity with editing tools or style guides such as the Chicago Manual of Style can be beneficial.

Job description

ABOUT FIRST BOOK:

First Book is a leading nonprofit social enterprise and leader in philanthropic public-private sector partnerships focused on removing barriers to education for children in need. Through partnerships with national brands and organizations, First Book has distributed over 225 million books and educational resources to programs and schools serving kids in under-resourced communities.

ABOUT THE ROLE:
  • Employment Type: Full-Time
  • Work Arrangement: Hybrid — Tuesday & Wednesday in-office required
  •  Location: Washington, DC
  • Reports To: Senior Director, Marketing & Communications

The Marketing and Communications Manager drives the execution of marketing campaigns that bring First Book's corporate and nonprofit partnerships to life. Sitting within the Marketing and Communications (MarComm) team, this role is the operational engine behind campaign delivery — managing timelines, coordinating assets, producing content, and ensuring that every campaign is delivered accurately, on brand, and on time.

This is a hands-on execution role well suited for a detail-oriented, highly organized marketer who thrives on collaboration, enjoys juggling multiple projects in a fast-paced environment, and takes ownership of deliverables from start to finish.

WHAT YOU'LL OWN:
  • Lead day-to-day execution of marketing components for assigned partnership campaigns — producing assets, managing timelines, and ensuring cross-functional delivery on time and within scope.
  • Develop and manage campaign materials, including digital assets, simple video elements, website landing pages, toolkits, print collateral, and event signage aligned to First Book brand standards.
  • Manage the production of printed and digital organizational materials — presentations, one-pagers, sell sheets, and reports — coordinating stakeholder input and moving projects forward efficiently.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Manage Marketing Campaign Execution for Corporate and Nonprofit Partnerships:
  • Manage day-to-day execution of marketing components for assigned partnership campaigns.
  • Coordinate with partnership staff and MarComm teammates to translate campaign goals into clear marketing deliverables.
  • Produce and manage campaign materials, including digital assets, simple video elements, website landing pages, toolkits, print collateral, and event signage.
  • Coordinate production schedules and track deliverables to ensure deadlines are met.
  • Support the execution of digital, traditional, and social media campaign elements in collaboration with MarComm colleagues.
  • Monitor campaign performance metrics and compile reports on results.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance campaigns through additional content or digital tactics when appropriate.

Support Organization-Wide Marketing Operations:
  • Manage and develop (or support development of) printed and digital marketing materials such as presentations, one-pagers, sell sheets, reports, and internal-facing tools.
  • Coordinate inputs and feedback from multiple stakeholders to move projects forward efficiently.
  • Manage project budgets for assigned materials and campaigns.
  • Support oversight of external designers and vendors to ensure projects stay on schedule and adhere to First Book brand standards.
  • Apply strong organizational and time-management skills to balance multiple priorities and shifting deadlines.

Qualifications:
  • Solid experience executing digital marketing campaigns and producing marketing materials across multiple channels.
  • Experience coordinating campaigns, partnerships, or multi-step projects.
  • Strong organizational skills with a demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Hands-on design and content development experience with an understanding of brand guidelines.
  • Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with the ability to adapt content for different formats and audiences.
  • Experience working with WordPress or similar website platforms.
  • Familiarity with social media, digital content, and basic performance tracking metrics.
  • Cause marketing experience is a plus.
  • Collaborative, dependable team player with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, consistent with the scope and classification of this position.
WHAT YOU'LL BRING:
Education:
  • Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) in Marketing, Communications, Business, or a related field required.

Experience:
  • 4+ years of experience in marketing, communications, or project management.
  • Demonstrated experience executing digital marketing campaigns and producing multi-channel marketing materials.
  • Experience managing campaigns, partnerships, or multi-step projects from concept through delivery.
  • Experience working with WordPress or a comparable CMS.

Skills:
  • Canva and WordPress proficiency required.
  • Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills with the ability to adapt content across formats and audiences.
  • Familiarity with social media strategy, digital content, and basic performance tracking metrics.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills with a demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Collaborative, solutions-oriented team player with strong interpersonal skills.

Preferred:
  • Familiarity with Marketing Cloud, Adobe Photoshop, or InDesign.
  • Experience with Google Analytics, data reporting, or basic HTML.
  • Cause marketing experience.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:
Total Rewards - In compliance with the District of Columbia Wage Transparency Act, First Book will provide the pay range for this position to applicants upon request or as part of the job posting.
  • Salary Range: $65,000 – $75,000 annually.

All full-time employees are eligible for the following:
  • Medical and dental insurance coverage.
  • Life insurance and Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) coverage.
  • Paid vacation and sick leave.
  • 12 paid holidays annually.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with employer matching contributions.
  • Employer-provided parking stipend (Washington, DC).

TO APPLY:
Submit a resume and a cover letter detailing your interest in this position.
  • Only applications submitted through First Book's approved platform will be considered.
