Job description

We are seeking to fill a Consumer Underwriter/Bank Collections Position in one of our locations: Yoakum, Katy, Odessa, or San Antonio

Job Summary:

The Consumer Underwriter is responsible for evaluating and processing various types of consumer loan applications, ensuring compliance with the bank's credit policy and fair lending requirements. This role involves direct interaction with customers, both in person and by phone, to gather necessary information and guide them through the application process. Additionally, the underwriter will prepare loan closing documents and ensure collateral perfection.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Application Processing: Collect loan applications from customers in person or by phone, ensuring all required information is collected accurately.
  • Loan Evaluation: Review and evaluate consumer loan applications, including vehicle, unsecured, home purchase, home equity, and refinance loans.
  • Decision Making: Approve loans in accordance with the bank's credit policy and fair lending requirements, including UDAAP.
  • Customer Service: Handle inquiries and assist customers throughout the loan application process.
  • Compliance: Ensure adherence to federal and state laws and regulations related to consumer lending, including UDAAP and fair lending requirements. Audit and review applications as needed.
  • Documentation: Prepare loan closing documents and ensure timely completion of all necessary paperwork.
  • Collateral Perfection: Verify and secure necessary documentation for collateral perfection.
  • Software Utilization: Enter and process application information in the loan origination and documentation software.
  • Team Collaboration: Assist other loan service representatives to ensure applications are processed according to service level standards.
  • Communication: Provide prompt, accurate responses to all customer inquiries.
  • Collections: Handle consumer lending collections and assist with commercial collection efforts as needed.

Qualifications/Skills:

  • Previous experience in consumer lending or underwriting preferred.
  • Ability to evaluate loan applications and make decisions within credit policy.
  • Experience with loan documentation, including consumer and real estate loans. TRID documentation experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations related to consumer lending, including UDAAP and fair lending requirements.
  • Ability to follow up on customer complaints, questions, or requests.
  • Proficient in Laser Pro, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and decision-making ability.
  • High attention to detail and quality.
  • Effective prioritization and time management skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum two years of experience reviewing credit reports and income documentation.
  • Preferred bachelorโ€™s degree in finance, accounting, or a related field. Equivalent combinations of education and experience considered.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Ability to learn and use job-specific software.
  • Proficiency in creating clear, concise documents using database, spreadsheet, word processing, and desktop publishing software.
