What Does an Assistant Editor Do?

An assistant editor works with an editorial team that includes writers and other editors, so a collaborative approach is beneficial. Primary responsibilities cover both writing and editing duties, along with research, fact-checking, and story pitching tasks. As an assistant editor, you serve as a copy editor and support a creative team through designing and publishing copy. You focus on accuracy and producing quality content on online platforms and in print. Time management and technical skills are an asset as well.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Assistant Editor, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Assistant Editor, you need strong editing, proofreading, and organizational skills, often supported by a relevant degree in English, journalism, or communications. Familiarity with editing software such as Adobe InDesign, Microsoft Word, and content management systems is typically required. This role is highly technical and detail-driven, requiring someone who thrives in fast-paced environments, can manage multiple shows simultaneously, and takes pride in the foundational work that keeps post-production running smoothly. The ideal candidate is proactive, adaptable, creatively resourceful, and deeply accountable when handling media and workflows.

You will play a critical role in ingesting, syncing, organizing, and safeguarding media assets while supporting editors.

  • Creative Problem Solving - Approaches technical and creative challenges with resourcefulness, helping improve workflow efficiency while supporting editors in overcoming roadblocks.
  • Collaborative Adaptability - Comfortable working across multiple shows and stakeholders simultaneously, balancing personalities and shifting priorities while remaining team-oriented and solutions-focused.

Key Responsibilities

  • Asset Tracking & Documentation - Maintain detailed tracking systems for all media during ingestion and post-production, including spreadsheets and written logs to create a reliable paper trail for every asset.
  • Editorial Support - Assist editors with project prep, minor edits, exports, Media Encoder workflows, and timeline organization to maintain pacing and style consistency.
  • Technical Troubleshooting & Archiving - Provide light technical support for editors, troubleshoot application issues, manage archiving workflows including LTO tape processes and ShotPut Pro, and prep projects for versioning and long-term storage.
  • Project Coordination & Prioritization - Manage tasks across multiple shows simultaneously, delegate when appropriate, protect focused workflow time, and ensure projects stay on schedule.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Based in Los Angeles with the ability to work on-site in Burbank, CA.
  • Required proficiency in Adobe Premiere Pro and Media Encoder.
  • Working knowledge of Adobe After Effects and Photoshop is a plus.
  • Experience with ShotPut Pro, LTO archiving, and shared server environments.
  • Experience with multicam prep and syncing workflows.
  • Familiarity with digital file management systems and collaborative tools such as Google Drive and Frame.io.
  • Prior experience in a similar role at a reputable digital media or production company preferred.
  • Strong general technical ability and comfort troubleshooting software and workflow issues.
  • Demonstrated willingness to continuously learn and grow within evolving digital post-production environments.
