Job description

The Assistant Athletic Coach is responsible for, but not limited to, the following:

  • Collegiality - The assistant coach is to support and follow the direction of the head coach in all matters that pertain to the sport. They are to assist the head coach in promoting the philosophy and goals of the school and the Athletic Department. The assistant coach must be loyal to the head coach and the program.
  • Practices - The assistant coach is to attend practice on a daily basis and assist our student athletes in proper and correct techniques. The head coach of any level is responsible for having a written practice plan on a daily basis.
  • Attendance - The assistant coach will attend meetings of school or Athletic Department when required. They must also attend staff meetings called by the head coach.
  • Scouting - The assistant coach is responsible to assist the head coach in all aspects of advance scouting.
  • Absence of the head coach - In the absence of the head coach, the assistant coach may step in to assume all responsibilities of the head coach.
  • Support of School Mission - The assistant coach is responsible for supporting the academic, spiritual and social mission of the school. It is expected that the assistant coach keeps abreast of students academic performances. Finally, it is expected that the assistant coach support the spiritual mission of the school by coordinating team prayer before athletic contests and attending the program mass or prayer service.
  • Tryouts - The assistant coach will be responsible for administering a tryout period for their sport. The tryout period must last at least 5 practices. Students must be given a list of items that they will be evaluated on during this tryout period.
  • Additional Duties - The assistant coach may also have other duties assigned to them by the head coach of the program. Some of these duties may include the handling of equipment, working with student managers, statistics, etc…
  • Knowledge - In consultation with the head coach, the assistant coach will continually look at ways of updating oneself in regards to professional development.
  • Paperwork - The assistant coach is responsible for all school and league required paperwork.
  • Supervision - The assistant coach is responsible for supervising their student athletes before, during and after practice. This supervision also applies to before, during and after games.
  • Support Staff - The assistant coach is responsible for coordinating support staff for their level (managers, statisticians, etc..)
  • Certification - The assistant coach will be responsible for completion of all coaches certification classes including the state CIF class as well as current CPR and First Aid.

Pre-Season/Summer Program - As coordinated by the head varsity coach, the assistant coach will help in the running of the pre-season and summer program.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have experience coaching at the high school or college level. Candidates should have experience working, playing or coaching in a values-based educational program.
