The Assistant Tennis Coach is responsible for assisting the Head Coach in organizing and managing all phases of a Division I Tennis program, including recruiting, team travel, strength & conditioning, student-athlete academic monitoring, public speaking, camp/clinic coordination, overseeing equipment needs, budget management, marketing strategies, and community and alumni relations. The Assistant Tennis Coach assists the head coach in coaching and training student-athletes in the sport of tennis to prepare them for success in competition at the NCAA Division I level and to ensure their satisfactory academic progress through graduation.

The Assistant Tennis Coach fosters a positive environment that encourages and supports sportsmanship and ensures that public statements are supportive of the University and the Athletics Department. Sets a positive example for the Department by supporting the mission and philosophy of the Athletics program and the University. Adheres to all institution, conference, and NCAA rules and regulations. Reports all known NCAA violations in accordance with institutional, conference, and NCAA policies and guidelines. Serves as Campus Security Authority (CSA).

Responsibilities:

  • At the direction of the Head Coach, provide technical and tactical instruction, demonstration and teaching the sport's dynamics to student-athletes to ensure the full potential of individuals and the team as a whole

  • Communicate and motivate effectively with student-athletes to ensure that team members are improving, developing, and progressing as athletes during their collegiate careers

  • Utilize evaluation tools to monitor training progress and analyze performances

  • Assists in implementing practice plans and coaching team during scheduled competitions/events

  • Position program to achieve competitive goals as established in conjunction with athletics administration

  • Maintain effective, proactive, and responsive communication throughout the athletics program, while emphasizing relationships with head coach, sport administrators and support services

  • Be a professional representative of the University and a role model for student-athletes, the Department, and the community

  • Operate within the rules, regulations, and policies of the University and the Athletics Department

  • Contribute to and reinforce an environment of academic expectations, achievement, and success that supports and encourages academic progress and graduation.

  • In a manner consistent with institutional academic integrity, the Assistant Coach agrees to direct all communication concerning student-athletes academics through appropriate administrative and academic lines of communication as stipulated by departmental and university guidelines

  • Contribute to the total development of the student-athletes in the program in a manner consistent with the educational values of the University

  • In addition to their athletic development, provide support and assistance to service units and student-athletes with regard to academic progress and graduation

  • Plan and schedule all team travel activities including hotel, buses, planes, meals & practice times

  • Communicate with facilities and maintenance staff concerning facility needs and upkeep

  • Coordinate with staff on recruiting compliance, recruiting travel, official and unofficial visits

  • Collaborates with Head Coach, Athletic Trainers, and Strength & Conditioning Coach to design academic year (in-season and out-of-season) and summer conditioning programs

  • Order, issue, inventory, and maintain all team equipment and apparel

  • Assist the head tennis coach in all administrative areas

  • Assist with video coordination, and practice and game video administration duties

  • Assist with Student Manager coordination and daily supervision

  • Serve as Camp Coordinator - responsible for logistics, organization and set up of camps

  • Coordinate official and unofficial campus visits for recruits, arranging meetings with academic advisors, team members, and other university staff to give recruits a comprehensive view of the program and campus life

  • Manage the organization and ongoing maintenance of the recruiting database; this includes inputting new recruit information, updating existing profiles with the latest data, and ensuring the accuracy and completeness of all records.

  • Assist in coordinating the logistical aspects of NCAA certified events, including venue selection, scheduling, transportation arrangements, and other operational details to ensure the smooth execution of each event within compliance guidelines

  • Operate within the guidelines and requirements established by the University and the Department

  • Required documents and related administrative responsibilities must be handled in a thorough, complete, and timely manner. Some of these business responsibilities include but are not limited to contract reviews, budgeting, financial management, operational planning, scholarship aid review, and marketing.

  • Promote execution of the Athletic Department's strategic plan by adhering to its mission and core values and acting upon its goals and strategies

  • Within the scope of authority, use university resources within regulatory guidelines, adhere to university and department fiscal procedures and practices, and operate within the budgetary allotment allocated by the University unless prior approval has been given by the athletics administration

  • Foster a positive environment that encourages and supports sportsmanship and ensure that public statements are supportive of the University and the Athletics Department

Minimum Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution

  • Collegiate-level tennis playing experience required

  • Prior NCAA Division I coaching experience preferred

Certifications and Requirements:

Possess a valid driver's license and good driving record required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of principles of management, finance, and marketing.

  • Oral and written communication skills.

  • Customer service and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

Preferred:

Ability to string tennis racquets preferred

Two (2) years of tennis coaching experience

Compensation & Benefits

Salary: Commensurate with experience

Salary Range:

The target base annual salary range is $41,000 up to $47,000 and may be negotiable based on funding availability and candidate experience/skillset in relation to the minimum requirements of this position.
