The Area Coordinator (AC) is a 10-month, full-time, professional in the Office of Residence Life & HousingServices with responsibility for the student development and effective administration of a residentialcommunity housing a diverse population of roughly 900 undergraduate, graduate, and law students.
The Area Coordinator directly supervises student staff, including Residential Office Assistants (ROA) andMailroom employees within the residence halls. In addition to co-managing University-owned residentialproperties, the Area Coordinator may also manage University-sponsored properties such as hotels orleased units, at times.
Area Coordinators may have more than one office space in the residential properties within their assignedcampus and will be expected to be a visible presence in each. Suffolk's campus is mixed into the heart ofdowntown Boston, making it critical for this position to work autonomously, exercising excellent judgmentin the areas of responsibility. All ACs participate in the Administrator on Call duty rotation (24 hours perday, 7 days per week, 365 days per year) and may be requested to help resolve concerns over the phone or
in person.
As a live-in position, it is required that the on-campus apartment provided be the individual's primaryresidence and that person must maintain a high visibility within their residential area of responsibility. While the functional responsibilities of the position occur within the 10-month period from August through
May, the Area Coordinator salary will be paid out over 12 months, benefits will remain active all year, andthe Area Coordinator will be granted the ability to remain in their University-owned apartment during theiroff-months.
General Responsibilities
With support from Graduate Residence Directors within assigned campus, hire, train, and directly supervise Residential Office Assistants working in residential offices and mailrooms within assigned campus.
Maintain posted office hours, rotating between residence halls within assigned campus.
Attend bi-weekly one-on-one conversations with supervisor and weekly staff meetings for assigned campus.
Collaborate with Assistant Director of assigned campus to provide a high level of student support, establishing positive relationships with students through informal interactions, mediation of conflicts, meetings with students of concern, and/or referrals for students as related to academic, social, and personal matters.
Under the direction of the Associate Director of Residential Education (ADRE), collaborate with other Area Coordinator(s) to develop a monthly residential newsletter to be distributed campus wide.
Maintain accurate residential programming budget for residence halls within assigned campus.
Maintain cooperative work relationship with offices on campus, including but not limited to the Suffolk University Police Department (SUPD); Bursar; Facilities; Dining; Counseling, Health, and Wellness (CHW); Office of Diversity Services (ODS); Student Leadership and Involvement (SLI); Orientation and New Student Programs; and the Dean of Students Office.
Co-develop and train ROAs on effective policies and procedures for residential mailroom operations.
In consultation with the ADRE, develop and maintain cooperative relationships with academic offices and staff in the execution of current Living Learning Communities (LLC) and expansion of LLC offerings on campus.
Advise a Residence Hall Council (RHC) spanning all residence halls within assigned campus. This includes recruiting student interest, facilitating elections for open positions, scheduling and attending bi-weekly meeting, and assisting with the execution of RHC programs.
Maintain key and lockout inventory and logs for all residence halls within assigned campus.
Coordinate room reservations for common rooms, lounges, practice, and student spaces in residence halls within assigned campus.
Develop and maintain inventory of all student bedroom and lounge furniture in all residence halls within assigned campus. This includes but is not limited to item counts and conditions. Propose a standard operating procedure for replacement schedules and work with the Associate Director of Residential Housing Operations to make new purchases.
Under the direction of the ADRHO, oversee aspects of the move-out process for residence halls within assigned campus, including the processing of accurate damage billing charges.
Utilize StarRez to keep accurate records of furniture and keys within assigned campus.
Serve in the Professional on Call (POC) duty rotation with the other Assistant Director(s) and Area Coordinator(s).
Serve as an Administrative Hearing Advisor for mostly low- to medium-level conduct cases and stay current on all incident reports written within assigned campus.
Work extended hours during peak times of the academic year. Work evening and occasional weekends throughout the year.
Qualifications and Requirements
Master's degree in College Student Development, Higher Education Administration or related field strongly preferred. Live-in experience as a live-in professional or graduate assistant in a residence hall setting. Effective supervision, administrative, organizational, written and oral communication skills. Experience in conflict resolution, mediation, application of student development theory in a residence hall setting. Excellent decision-making skills.
While academic growth is encouraged, this is a full-time position with specifically busy times of the year, including but not limited to, Orientation, Move-In, and Move-Out. Schoolwork, class and finals schedules must not interfere with the responsibilities of the role.
