Job Overview

· This role serves as a key individual contributor responsible for the preparation and documentation of financial statements and financial information for use by Harris County.

· Assists in the preparation and documentation of the County's annual financial report (ACFR) including detailed review of the statements to the system for accuracy.

· Exercises initiative to explain variances, unusual items, and key business trends.

· Researches accounting rules and regulations and make recommendations regarding the County's accounting policies.

· Interacts with other entities and County departments to compile information for consolidated reporting.

· Interacts with external and internal auditors as needed.

· Prepares special financial and business-related analyses and research.


Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or other related field with a minimum of 30 hours of accounting coursework
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation or currently on CPA track preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum of three years of relevant and progressive financial reporting accounting experience
  • Experience in governmental accounting is required.
  • Experience with a large, complex accounting system is required.
  • Public accounting experience is preferred.
  • PeopleSoft experience is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)

  • Excellent verbal, listening and written communication skills.
  • Strong ability to plan and organize workload, perform under pressure, and meet deadlines.
  • High degree of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Excellent problem solving, decision making, and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in the use of MS Office with an emphasis Microsoft Excel.
  • Willingness to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Exemplary interpersonal skills that will facilitate productive working relationships with internal Harris County departments and management as well as external stakeholders and auditors.
  • Keen understanding of Generally Accepted Account Principles (GAAP) and Government Accounting and Standards Board (GASB) standards.

Nature of Work

  • Physical requirements for the position are the ability to sit for extended periods of time and the ability to push/pull, lift and carry up to 40 lbs.
  • Hybrid-telework | Monday - Friday | 40 hrs. per week
  • May be required to work more than forty hours during the workweek or on weekends when special projects or deadlines need to be met.
