REDWOOD CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT

CLASS TITLE: INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT - BILINGUAL EDUCATION


BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, assist a certificated teacher in providing instruction to individuals or small groups of limited or non-English speaking students in a classroom or other learning environment including LEP classes and Bilingual Newcomers Centers; assist students in their acculturation to the American and English­ speaking culture; prepare instructional materials and perform a variety of routine clerical duties as assigned; translate for parents and teachers as assigned.

 

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

Assist certificated instructional personnel in developing course of study and lesson plans in English and a second designated language; translate lessons from English to a second designated language; assist in planning and arranging field trips and special activities.

Assist in the presentation of instructional materials and academic instruction to individuals or small groups of students, reinforcing instruction and following up on specific language, spelling and mathematics activities as directed by the teacher.

Provide instructional assistance in primary language literacy, English and in school and community acculturation for students new, recent or unaccustomed to the American culture.

Communicate with students in English and a designated second language to facilitate instructional processes; assist students in reading, performing remedial exercises and other basic instruction; assist in the development of proper hygiene and cleanliness.

Translate and interpret oral and written communications for parents and teachers.

Assist in the preparation of materials for classroom use as directed by the teacher; explain and assist in basic computer operation; confer with teachers concerning programs and materials to meet student needs.

Prepare, administer, score and record tests and papers as directed, including proficiency placement tests; maintain student records and files as directed; assist students in reviewing homework assignments and test results.

Supervise classroom, playground, assembly and study activities as directed; direct, observe and control behavior of students according to approved procedures to assure safety and harmony.

Model and assist in the development of appropriate social behavior using positive reinforcement techniques; report progress regarding student performance and behavior as required.

Maintain, distribute and account for an inventory of textbooks, supplies and equipment.

Perform a variety of clerical duties such as recording grades, assembling materials, preparing charts, taking roll, maintaining records and files and typing and duplicating classroom materials.

Schedule, prepare and operate audio-visual equipment, general office equipment and other instructional equipment; distribute and collect papers and supplies.

Assist in the preparation of instructional and visual aids including posters, charts, displays, exhibits and stencils.

Participate in and provide oral and written translation in parent-teacher conferences, telephone calls and other District communication with limited or non-English speaking students, parents and family members; translate notes, letters and other materials as necessary.

Assist students by providing proper examples, emotional support, a friendly attitude and general guidance; administer first aid as needed.

Confer with teachers concerning programs and materials to meet student needs; attend meetings and in-service training related to bilingual curriculum or student­ related issues.

Assure the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and procedures; maintain classroom and related facilities in an attractive, safe, clean and orderly condition.

Direct group activities of students as assigned. Perform related duties as assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Correct oral and written usage of English and a designated second language. Child guidance principles and practices.

Positive behavior reinforcement techniques.

Basic subjects taught in the District schools, including arithmetic, grammar, spelling, language and reading.

Safe practices in classroom activities.

Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary. Reading and writing communication skills.

Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy. Basic computer operation.

Basic record-keeping techniques. Classroom procedures and conduct. Basic instructional techniques.

ABILITY TO:

Assist with - the instructional and related activities of the assigned learning environment.

Read, write and translate English and a designated second language. Speak and interpret English and a designated second language.

Establish and maintain effective relationships with students, parents, staff and the

public including members of ethnic communities and foreign countries.

Demonstrate an understanding, patient and receptive attitude toward individuals from foreign cultures and ethnic communities.

Perform clerical duties such as filing, typing, duplicating and maintaining records and files related to the instructional program.

Print and write legibly.

Understand and follow oral and written directions.

Read, interpret and follow rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Work confidentially with discretion.

Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Observe and control student behavior according to approved policies and procedures. Operate instructional and office equipment.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and one year experience working with youth in an organized setting and some experience working with people of various cultures.

 

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Some positions in this classification may require a valid California driver's license, evidence of appropriate automobile insurance based on DMV regulations and insurable by the District liability insurance carrier.
