Attendant: Animal Caretaker

Objective

To effectively manage and provide research facilities, animals, and veterinary support that is compliant to the Quality Management System, the Animal Care and Use Program, and project timelines.

Purpose
Perform routine basic duties in the care of research animals off study as part of the site re-use colony and the sanitation of animal facilities used to house colony animals.

Job Specific Duties and Responsibilities
•Providing basic animal care for animals according to prescribed procedures and instructions, such as:

o feeding and watering animals
o cleaning and sanitation of animal rooms, cages, and facilities
o disposing of waste materials
o grooming, bathing, socializing, or exercising animals,
•Assist with animal treatments and procedures

Physical Requirements
•While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee is required to
o communicate effectively by talking, listening, reading, and writing
o use their hands and fingers, to handle or feel
o stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, and to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and carry
o use basic/ advanced cleaning equipment/ machinery and chemicals such as the incinerator, final cleaning equipment, etcetera, and
o to wear the required protective clothing and equipment issued for the specific position and/or task
o Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds,
•Vision abilities required to perform this job include close vision,
•Very good personal hygiene is of utmost importance at all times since this position is based in a biosafety area with strict contamination prevention practices
•At all times, be sober and clear of influence of any substances which may affect safety and work quality in any manner,
•Comply with any additional physical requirements as determined by the Occupational Risk Evaluation Profile for the position,
•Physically fit and able to work with animals daily, which may include adequate physical strength to handle all types of animals,
•No disclosed/identified chronic/ medical conditions that may negatively influence the performance of duties/ job fit/ employee wellness. e.g. Allergic reactions, bronchiectasis, etcetera

Work Environment
•The employee is required to:
o work in a laboratory/research type environment with strict access and biosafety controls
o interact with and handle animals
o be available for work during normal work hours as well as after-hours according to pre-arranged departmental schedules that may require evening, weekend, and public holiday work
o be subjected to continuous training, supervision as well as relevant company policies, procedures, and guidelines.
