Job Title: Senior Accountant                                 

Department: Accounting                                              

Reports to: Controller       

Job Status: Full-Time                                                       

Schedule: M-F, 8:00-4:30

 

Summary:

 

The Senior Accountant at The Northern Plains Railroad, Inc. (NPR), a Northern Plains Rail Services company, collaborates closely with the Controller and other accounting staff to enhance the financial performance and success of the organization.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities are, but are not limited to: 

Cost Accounting

·        Assist in developing and maintaining a job cost environment for the construction business line and other affiliated companies within Acumatica.

·        Analyze production costs to identify areas for improvement.

·        Coordinate physical inventory with cycle counts and validate cost of goods sold during monthly close-outs.

·        Analyze business operations, equipment availability, and utilization.

·        Maintain a cost accounting system and ledger.

·        Ensure compliance with accounting procedures and monitor job costs in collaboration with the construction team.

·        Participate in project financial planning and implementation.

·        Utilize project reporting software and databases effectively.

·        Record and process job production costs, track financial commitments, recognize revenue, and generate project profitability reports.

·        Maintain an ongoing work-in-progress report.

·        Communicate with the construction team and other companies on contract documents, change orders, and modifications to the construction team.

 

Payroll Management:

 

·        Assist with weekly payroll processing for NPR and affiliated companies.

·        Review and post payroll journal entries and reconciliation.

·        Prepare Intercompany billing.

·        Assist with Federal, State, and RRB Quarterly and Annual Reports.

·        Maintain or enhance the payroll system to meet business and regulatory needs.

·        Ensure accurate calculation of wages and processing and job costing.

·        Perform payroll, benefits-related journal entries, and reconciliations as directed

 

General Accounting Duties:

 

·        Manage fixed assets schedules and maintain the general ledger.

·        Assist with insurance policy management for assets.

·        Reconcile bank statements.

·        Perform monthly, quarterly, and yearly close processes, including journal entry preparation.

·        Assist with Annual Budget preparation and Capital Purchase requests.

·        Support Controller with various reporting items.

·        Assist with RAMP management and Credit Card Processing.

·        Drive process improvements and efficiencies in collaboration with the Controller.

·        Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

·        Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously in a deadline-driven environment.

·        Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and familiarity with accounting software.

·        Valid driver’s license and ability to occasionally travel

 

Physical Demands:

Education and Training:

Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance.

Experience in cost accounting; construction industry preferred.

·        Strong Microsoft Excel skills, ability to manipulate and develop data into workable models and projections, and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

·        Familiarity with Acumatica preferred.

·        Valid Driver’s License.

·        Must have and maintain an insurable driving status which includes but is not limited to NPR driver provisions.
