Position Description Summary

APT Research is hiring a Mission Assurance Engineer 2 to support the Launch Services Program (LSP) on the KSC Safety and Mission Assurance Support Services (SMASS IV) contract at Kennedy Space Center, FL. This person will provide mission assurance engineering expertise for NASA Safety Mission Assurance LSP division.

Responsibilities include but not limited to the following:

  • Support the NASA KSC Launch Services Program (LSP) SA-D Mission Assurance Branch
  • Perform independent complex analyses and technical assessments of launch vehicle components/ system designs/ testing/ validation, and nonconformance resolution
  • Provide independent technical recommendations of system/ component mission readiness
  • Support LSP Watch item risk assessment: Participate in Hardware Acceptance Reviews, critical process assessments, and quality assessments of flight vehicles (ULA, SpaceX, etc.)
  • Support technical input for engineering review boards, readiness reviews, and technical interchange meetings
  • Support Launch vehicle certifications, including assessment of qualification and acceptance test procedures
  • Provide real-time support of hardware verification testing, production floor activity, and launch operations oversight
  • Ensure adherence to applicable acceptance and qualification standards

Required Experience/Education:

  • Education: Bachelors of Science degree in Engineering or Science (mechanical/ aerospace/ industrial)
  • Experience: 4 years of related Engineering experience (direct engineering practices for launch vehicles)
  • Exceptional verbal and written communications skills
  • Must be able to interact and develop working relationships with various customers, peers, and management within and outside of KSC S&MA

Security Clearance Requirement:

  • Position subject to pre-employment background investigation
  • Position subject to a pre-employment drug test
  • No secret clearance is required, but must be able to qualify for an unescorted badge (US Citizen required)

Preferred Experience:

  • Expendable Launch Vehicle systems and subcomponent experience is highly desired in one or more of the following disciplines: Mechanical systems; structures; propulsion; and materials
  • Experience preparing, presenting, and briefing technical assessments to NASA management
  • Flight hardware acceptance/pedigree review experience
  • Experience in engineering, safety, and quality requirements associated with NASA Launch Services Program (LSP) in the area of expendable launch vehicles
  • Experience with risk management & risk assessments to ensure flight readiness of launch vehicle mechanical systems and assure adequate margin exists for risk acceptance and determining residual risk

Travel Requirements:

  • Requires ability to travel domestically (within the U.S.) <15%

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires sitting for extended periods of time at a workstation / desk
  • Access flight hardware processing areas, climb stairs
  • Ability to lift >15 lbs.

Other Essential Functions:

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgement
  • Work attire must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk / hazard to the employee or others
