Description

The Principal Engineer - Advanced Trainer at Okuma America Corporation is responsible for learning, researching, and analyzing new technologies, unique field occurrences, and troubleshooting techniques. Concurrently, the PE is responsible for creating relevant documentation in an effort to aid in the building of the knowledge database and training content to promote knowledge transfer by educating the various groups within the organization, distribution network, and end user levels via formalized instructor led training courses, virtual courses, mentorships, and/or apprenticeships.

  • Mentor and support the various technical groups within the organization
  • Manage new service product solution development to complement updated technologies
  • Interact with Japanese advisors to obtain and update product technical documentation
  • Develop training materials relevant to new technologies and field discoveries resulting from site visits
  • Develop new training materials as needed for Okuma member, distributor, and/or end user training needs to include (training manuals, procedures, videos, reference documents, knowledge base articles, presentations, etc.)
  • Update existing training documentation upon revision notification regarding spec change, safety change, etc.
  • Support and review training and assessment material preparation on outsourced training documentation by our education partners (Rowan-Cabarrus Community College) in support of the Okuma Machine Tool Academy
  • Provide mentorship to any member joining on a business trip for general knowledge sharing and greater understanding of mechanical/electrical training opportunity at hand
  • Create new training course curriculum for emerging technological advances or end user/distributor training needs relevant to mechanical and/or electrical competencies in customer service
  • Adhere to all company employment policies and safe practices
  • Perform other duties as assigned and explores opportunities to add value

Qualifications

Experience/Training/Education

  • High School or Equivalent Math and Science
  • License/certificate Electromechanical training
  • Trade School Technical training
  • Associates Degree Technical field Study

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

General:

  • Must effectively prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced production environment
  • Use of basic PC tools, such as Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint

Desired:

  • Technical writing skills
  • Strong working knowledge of Adobe, InDesign, or equivalent
  • Experience with audio visual equipment
  • Proven video editing capabilities

Technical:

  • Basic mechanical/electrical skills
  • Ability to read blueprints, electrical schematics a plus
  • Basic use of hand tools and variety of electrical and mechanical devices, such as precision measuring equipment, multimeters, oscilloscope, cranes, forklifts, etc.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills

Communication:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as exceptional listening skills
  • Exceptional ability to speak and write effectively in a business environment
  • Exceptional ability to ask necessary questions

Math & Reasoning:

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
  • Strong math skills
  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and willingness to adapt to change and take initiative

Physical and Environmental Elements

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to sit continuously for 1/4 of the normal work shift, and stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms for at 3/4 of the normal work shift
  • Ability to lift and carry, push, or pull up to 70 pounds
  • Ability to stoop, crouch and reach
  • Ability to talk or hear continuously
  • Ability to see clearly to do all work-related tasks (clear or corrected vision at 20 inches or less)
  • Finger dexterity is required frequently for over 3/4 of the normal work shift including operating a phone, computer/ electronic equipment, electronic tools, pallet jack, and forklift

Work Environment:

  • About half of the position's functions are performed in the office environment with standard equipment and moderate noise levels (examples: computers, printers, copiers, light traffic, and phone)
  • The other half of the position's functions are performed either at a customer site, distributor location, or in an Okuma warehouse/showroom/tech center. Will often interact with the production/warehouse environment. Thus, the employee may work in an open warehouse area where temperatures may be subject to outdoor conditions in terms of cold and heat. There is exposure to various tools and equipment as well as forklift operations and corresponding noise levels.

Special Requirements

  • Maintain annual OSHA safety certifications as required by job duties
  • After completion of onboarding: Frequent travel required (75%)
