Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the general direction of the Camp Director, the camp group director is responsible for planning daily activities that coincide with the mission of the New Discoveries Day Camp. The camp group director will assist in all camp activities and special events, as well as always being responsible for the safety and health of all campers in their supervision.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Plan, implement and supervise a developmentally appropriate, fun, and enriching activity curriculum for camp groups throughout the summer.
  • Maintain positive relationships with parents and demonstrate positive communication skills that will foster a healthy and comfortable atmosphere.
  • Maintain clean, neat, and organized environment acceptable to the YMCA Camp Director.
  • Promote and supervise the health, emotional, social, intellectual, and physical development of each child.
  • Create and maintain a safe, secure, and nurturing environment for all program participants.
  • Manage the performance of all staff along with the Camp Director.
  • Manage and control inventory of equipment and supplies.
  • Work with all other staff members in a cooperative effort-TEAMWORK.
  • Attending all staff meetings.
  • Follow personnel policies of the YMCA of Montclair and policies defined in the staff manual.
  • Maintain all required records and logs.
  • Perform all other duties, as assigned.
  • Attend required Abuse Risk Management training and adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising members and participants.
  • Follow employee and volunteer screening requirements and use screening instruments to screen for abuse risk. Provide employees and volunteers with on-going supervision and training related to abuse risk.
  • Provide employees and volunteers with regular feedback regarding their boundaries with consumers and require them to adhere to policies and procedures related to abuse risk.
  • Respond quickly to policy and procedure violations using the Y’s disciplinary procedures and respond seriously and confidentially to reports of suspicious and inappropriate behaviors and follow mandated reporting requirements.
  • Communicates to all employees and volunteers the Y’s commitment to protect our members from abuse.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BA in Education, Child Development, Physical Education, Recreation or related field and two years direct experience with children under age 13, including at least one year in a supervisory capacity OR
  • School Age Childcare credential and three years direct experience with children under age 13, including at least one year in a supervisory capacity OR
  • Two years of college with 18 credits in child development, elementary education, physical education, recreation or related field and three years direct experience with children under age 13, including at least one year in a supervisory capacity.
  • Excellent human relations and communication skills.
  • Must have strong organizational skills.
  • Demonstrate a positive and constructive attitude.
  • Demonstrate verbally and by role modeling a sound knowledge of good teaching practices and of child growth and development.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the mission of the YMCA and its capacity to develop youth. The ability to articulate and model the YMCA’s four core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility are essential.
  • Must have a CPR/AED and First Aid Certification or get certified within 90 days of employment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This work requires the following physical activities: climbing, bending, stooping, kneeling, twisting, reaching, sitting, standing, walking, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, repetitive motions, talking, hearing and visual acuity. He/she must have the ability to lift to 50 lbs. The work is performed both indoors and outdoors and may require occasional travel to the various sites of the YMCA of Montclair.

COMPANY BENEFITS:

Free membership and 25% discount for programs and camp fees for the duration of the season.

HOURLY PAY RATE: $18.00 to $19.25

WORK SCHEDULE: Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 3:15 pm
