Database Administrator (DBA) Intern

We are looking for a part-time Database Administrator Intern, to learn from and support our extremely talented Operations team! This unique paid student internship provides valuable real-world experience in a fast-paced technology company.

We are looking for someone who is interested in actively contributing to projects that have an impact on the company's database infrastructure. This role will work on AWS cloud and on-premises data center environments helping to gain skills in cutting-edge cloud technologies and traditional data center setups. In this role you will gain valuable hands-on experience working with industry-standard database management systems, including PostgreSQL and MySQL. You will also develop a diverse set of skills, including database performance optimization, security, backup and recovery, and compliance management.

Projects and Responsibilities:

Project 1: Database Performance Optimization

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the DBA team to monitor, analyze, and optimize the performance of PostgreSQL and MySQL databases.
  • Utilize Percona PPM and DataDog to track database performance metrics, identify bottlenecks, and make recommendations for improvements.
  • Assist in fine-tuning query optimization, indexing, and resource allocation to enhance overall database performance.

Project 2: Database Maintenance and Backup Strategies

Responsibilities:

  • Work with the team to develop and implement robust backup and recovery strategies for both AWS cloud and on-premises data center environments.
  • Create and maintain backup scripts, schedules, and procedures for disaster recovery.
  • Conduct regular database maintenance tasks such as vacuuming, reindexing, and archiving data.

Project 3: Security and Compliance

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in ensuring the security and compliance of databases by implementing access controls and encryption mechanisms.
  • Work with the team to review and apply security patches and updates.
  • Collaborate in maintaining audit logs, monitoring for security incidents, and contributing to compliance documentation.

Project 4: Database Documentation and Knowledge Sharing

Responsibilities:

  • Document database architecture, configurations, and standard operating procedures.
  • Create knowledge base articles and share best practices with the team.
  • Participate in cross-training sessions to enhance team-wide database expertise.

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in a relevant degree program such as Computer Science, Information Technology, Database Management, or a related field.
  • Strong academic performance, particularly in coursework related to databases, SQL, and Linux.
  • Basic understanding of database management systems, with a focus on PostgreSQL and MySQL.
  • Familiarity with SQL and query optimization.
  • Knowledge of Linux operating systems and basic command-line usage.
  • Experience with cloud platforms, particularly AWS, is a plus.
  • Familiarity with database monitoring tools such as Percona PPM and DataDog is a plus. If not, a strong willingness to learn and adapt to these tools is essential.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical thinking abilities to diagnose and resolve database performance issues.
  • Meticulous attention to detail is essential for tasks like database optimization and security compliance.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills to work within a team and convey technical concepts clearly.
  • An enthusiasm for learning and keeping up with industry trends and best practices in database administration.
  • Willingness to take initiative, propose solutions, and actively contribute to database projects.
  • Effective time management skills to balance multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • The ability to adapt to different database environments, such as both on-premises and cloud-based databases.
  • Understanding the importance of data security and a willingness to learn and implement security best practices and compliance requirements.


Compensation: $18.00 to $25.00 an hour

Workdays: 2-3 days a week in the Bellevue, WA office

Hours: May not exceed 8 hours per day or 20 hours per week

Work schedule will be determined by selected student intern candidate and the hiring manager

Reports To: Patrick O’Brien, VP IT Operations

The pay range reflects the salary amount the Company reasonably expects to pay for the position. It is not a guarantee of actual compensation or a specific payment amount to any candidate. The actual compensation will depend on numerous factors including, without limitation, a particular candidate’s experience, and qualifications.
