Job Description

Position Summary:

The Senior Staff Accountant will play a crucial role in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial data, analyzing financial information, and preparing financial reports. This position requires a detail-oriented individual with strong analytical skills and a deep understanding of accounting principles. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with other members of the executive leadership team and members of the Board of Directors and Finance Committee to support strategic decision-making and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.

Financial Operations Management:

  • Perform day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliation and payroll utilizing accounting software and financial management systems, e.g., ADP, QuickBooks, Bill.com, ACGI (member dues) billing, Stripe, ACH transactions, and online merchandising applications.
  • Perform month-end and year-end close processes, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial statement preparation.
  • Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports to identify trends, variances, and areas for improvement.
  • Reconcile balance sheet accounts and investigate any discrepancies or irregularities.
  • Implement and maintain robust internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure accuracy in financial reporting.
  • Develop and implement written standard operating procedures (SOP) for all accounting operations and processes in keeping with existing and new policies governing the financial operations of the association.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and efficiency gains within the finance function.

Cash Flow Management:

  • Manage cash flow to ensure adequate liquidity for operational needs.
  • Develop and implement cash management policies and procedures to optimize cash flow efficiency.

Financial Reporting and Compliance:

  • Prepare accurate and timely financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements.
  • Monitor key financial metrics and performance indicators, providing regular reports to senior management.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant accounting standards, regulations, and laws.
  • Coordinate with external auditors and regulatory agencies as necessary.

Planning and Implementation:

  • Assist in budgeting and forecasting activities, providing valuable insights and recommendations to management.
  • Assist in the implementation and maintenance of internal controls to safeguard company assets and mitigate risks.
  • Support cross-functional teams by providing financial analysis and insights to aid in decision-making processes.
  • Participate in special projects as needed, such as process improvements, system implementations, or financial analysis initiatives.
  • Mentor and train accounting support staff, fostering a culture of continuous learning and development within the team.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field required.
  • CPA or equivalent certification preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years progressive accounting experience, with a focus on financial process management and execution, account payables, accounts receivable, cash flow management, financial reporting, and analysis.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and proficiency in financial accounting principles.
  • Direct experience using ADP (or similar HRIS), QuickBooks, Bill.com, CRM database billing (ACGI), Stripe processing, ACH transactions, and online merchandising applications highly desirable.  Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel required.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex financial data.
  • Detail-oriented with a high level of accuracy in work output.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to articulate financial information to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple priorities and deadlines effectively.
  • Strong self-starter and proven team player in a high achievement-oriented environment. 
  • Prior experience in a supervisory or mentoring role is a plus.
  • Strong ethical standards and commitment to maintaining confidentiality of financial information.
  • Travel required one week per year for our industry conference.

Physical Requirements

  • Physical requirements are consistent with working in an office environment – sitting for long periods of time, walking throughout the office, able to go up and down stairs without an elevator, able to lift and move 35 pounds, repetitive motions that may include wrists, hands, and fingers, and operating office equipment,
  • When attending PowerTest, or any other event on behalf of the association, standing and walking for an extended period will be required over multiple days, along with moving, packing and unpacking heavy boxes, and any other physical requirement to put on a large event like a conference.
