The Varsity Yearbook Commercial Print Estimator estimates costs of printing and binding books, periodicals, pamphlets, and other Printed matter, based on specifications outlined on sales orders or submitted by prospective customers, by performing the following duties:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Evaluates customer specifications and needs.

Examines manuscripts, sketches, artwork, and sample layouts in paper and electronic form.

Calculates unit and production costs, considering factors such as size and number of sheets or pages, paper stock requirements, halftones, number and units of colors, ink, binding procedures, and quality of finished product.

Calculates time requirements.

Estimates labor and material cost of specific phase of printing such as plate making or binding.

Determines cost effectiveness and competitive price.

Confers with department heads or production personnel to develop or confirm information regarding various cost elements.

Estimates costs of shipping or mailing finished printed matter if specified on order.

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Database software; Manufacturing software; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.
