Job Description

United Way of Greater Cleveland is a “Flexible First” organization. “Flexible First” means that we embrace a hybrid model that allows employees to work both remotely and at our existing office. Employees will regularly work at our existing office for approximately 10 to 80 percent of their time each month based on business/operational needs, and the rest of the time they may work from a remote physical location of their choice within a reasonable commuting distance from the office which must be identified to the organization in advance. Human Resources and Hiring Manager will set expectations on the employee’s preferred time in office with consideration to business/operational needs. UWGC has not defined a reasonable distance and expects employees will use judgment in determining this for themselves and understand the implications re: time commitment and cost of daily commute.

Purpose of Position:

The Senior Director, Development has direct oversight of all annual campaigns for United Way, to include managing a portfolio of companies as well as managing a team of Associate Directors, Development and Corporate Relations who each have a full complement of portfolio companies, as well as an Associate Director, Development and Community Campaign and Manager, Donor Experience. Coordinates and supervises the work of Associate Directors and is responsible for designing and initiating current and new workplace and annual giving strategies to ensure United Way initiatives and programs are aligned with company strategies. Serves as the primary staff partner that works with organizations and companies to plan and execute their workplace giving initiatives and campaigns. Using innovative means for fundraising in order to connect donors with the needs of the community and for building and maintaining relationships with volunteers, business leaders, campaign managers, and individual donors. Identifies opportunities to implement efficiencies to allow for greater productivity with current workplace clients while expanding the base of workplace campaigns.

Monday through Friday 9:00am - 5:00pm. Maybe required to work outside of standard work schedule.

Salary range $78,248.69 - $125,197.68

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Essential Job Functions/Key Accountabilities:

Development

1. Develops and implements annual engagement and campaign strategies or programs to sustain and increase workplace and annual giving.

2. Uses innovative means in designing and implementing strategies for increasing fundraising efforts.

3. Develops effective evaluation and measuring strategies to ensure plans complement other programs and are in line to United Way’s policies and procedures.

4. Monitors campaigns activity to evaluate annual fund activities, overall dollars raised, and other key performance indicators.

5. Prepare reports and presentations to keep leadership informed of annual campaign progress.

6. Builds, maintains, and strengthens relationships necessary for operating an effective workplace giving program aimed at generating increased levels of revenue on an annual basis.

7. Create, prioritize, and execute a strategy to develop a growing community direct giving campaign detailing goals, objectives and standards and aligning with goals and mission of United Way.

8. Direct implementation and oversee identification, cultivation, engagement, solicitation, and stewardship of individuals donors giving less than $10,000 annually.

Leadership Management

1. Leads and coordinates the work of a staff of Associate Directors and Manager to effectively implement campaigns through cultivating and strengthening relationships with key corporate and individual donors.

2. Works with staff to identify and secure new workplace partnerships.

3.Collaborates with fundraising team to develop and execute the best approach to donor solicitation and engagement.

4. Initiates staff training and mentoring for sales and relationship management techniques.

5. Develops workforce plans; sets short- and long-term plans and revenue goals in order to promote growth of the annual campaign.

6. Manages effectively by fostering an atmosphere of teamwork; ensures the professional development of staff by creating an environment for achieving personal and professional goals.

7. Handles hiring and firing decisions; interviews, selects, collaborates on pay scales and trains incoming or existing staff.

8. Develop and monitor department budget.

9. Responsible for handling performance evaluations, disciplinary actions, and conflict resolution.

Qualifications:

Required Education and Experience:

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • 8 years of development, sustainability, corporate social responsibility, marketing, fundraising experience in non-profit or private sector including prospect solicitation and management or the equivalent experience.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree strongly preferred.

  • Knowledge of the Cleveland and Northeast Ohio philanthropic community is an asset.

Working conditions are normal for an office environment which includes but not limited to the following:

  • Local travel/occasional overnight travel
  • Ability and means to travel on a flexible schedule as needed, proof of liability and property damage insurance on vehicle used is required.
  • Occasionally required to stand’ walk; sit; use hands to fingers; hand or feel objects; tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear.
  • Employees may need to occasionally lift up to 25 lbs.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal.
