Job Description

The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) is our region’s comprehensive planning organization. The agency and its partners are implementing ON TO 2050, a long-range plan to help the seven counties and 284 communities of northeastern Illinois implement strategies that address transportation, housing, economic development, open space, the environment, and other quality-of-life issues. CMAP is looking for talented, self-motivated individuals to gain experience in transportation planning as Field Data Collection Interns. If you think you are ready to gain some hands-on professional experience with CMAP, apply today!

Duties and responsibilities:

The interns will be responsible for collecting data to fulfill agency needs, described below:

  • In-person and video camera-assisted utilization counts for bicycle/pedestrian facilities.
  • Installing video camera equipment for vehicular (passenger and truck) ranging from 6 hours to 24 hours.
  • In-person and video camera-assisted railroad crossing delay observation counts.
  • Formatting of traffic/usage related data from CMAP and other sources, and geocoding into CMAP ArcGIS archives.
  • Installation of radar devices to collect speed data.
  • Collect field condition on the components of public rights of way to assess accessibility for people with disabilities.
  • Interpret online aerial photography for the verification of transportation-facility inventory data.
  • Record and summarize findings in spreadsheets, memos, reports, and in geographic information systems.

Work activities will primarily be in outside field locations throughout the seven-county CMAP region, with occasional travel to the CMAP office location. Travel expenses incurred traveling to field data collection locations and during scheduled data collection activities will be reimbursed.

Qualifications:

  • Must be enrolled in a bachelor's degree program and entering junior or senior status by fall 2024.
  • Interest in urban planning, regional planning, or related field

Intern Compensation: $20/hr
