Job Description

Position Purpose:

The Cook plays a crucial role in the Residential Treatment Program for Women and Children in South Los Angeles by preparing and serving meals to its residents. Creating a welcoming and warm atmosphere, the Cook ensures that women can enjoy their meals in a positive environment. The commitment to upholding the JWCH mission, aiming to enhance the health status and well-being of under-served segments of the Los Angeles County population, is central to this role. It's important to note that this position is funded through a contract with Los Angeles County Substance Abuse Prevention and Control.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Collaborates closely with the Lead Chef and Management Staff.
  2. Prepares and serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner on Saturdays and Sundays for a maximum of 31 female clients and up to 10 children.
  3. Handles meal preparation on holidays and designated days, including dinner.
  4. Prepares snacks tailored for pregnant and post-partum women and their children.
  5. Coordinates with the Children’s Coordinator to plan meals for children.
  6. Prepares evening snacks for clients.
  7. Facilitates afternoon groups on various topics, including Preparing Simple Meals, How to Make a Grocery List, and Making the Most out of Your Food Stamps.
  8. Conducts support staff duties as needed, such as answering phones, taking messages, directing clients, and conducting property rounds.
  9. Ensures kitchen safety through proper cleaning, sanitization, and disposal of cooking utensils and equipment, maintaining organization and safety according to all Food Safety guidelines and state requirements.
  10. Maintains cleanliness of the kitchen, dining room, refrigerator, appliances, cabinets, and pantry.
  11. Ensures cleanliness and inventory control of kitchenware, including serving dishes, plates, bowls, cups, and utensils.
  12. Conducts inventory of food and assists in preparing orders with the Chef as needed.
  13. Meets weekly and as needed with the multi-disciplinary team to review client food needs, dietary restrictions, allergies, and pregnant/parenting nutrition requirements.
  14. Responsible for picking up food at Food Banks and other identified locations.
  15. Complies with HIPAA and other mandates regarding client care and confidentiality.
  16. Ensures the organization’s adherence to all state, county, and federal treatment standards and regulations.
  17. Maintains an Incident Log and follows reporting procedures.
  18. Maintains confidentiality of all documents containing client identifier information.
  19. Discusses client information only with appropriate program personnel related to the care being provided.
  20. Observes and respects the confidentiality of information regarding fellow employees.
  21. Self-identifies potentially unsafe systems/processes/situations and reports them to the supervisor.
  22. Demonstrates a willingness to accommodate requirements or changing priorities in the workplace.
  23. Projects a positive professional image and adheres to the organizational dress code.
  24. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  1. Minimum one-year experience working in a large facility, responsible for cooking meals for groups of 25 or more people.
  2. Proficient in the process of ordering food through online platforms, such as US Foods or other similar services.
  3. Possession of a valid Food Handlers Permit with Serve Safe certification.
  4. Demonstrated working knowledge of health, safety, and sanitation practices.
  5. Current CPR and First Aid Certification
  6. Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, handling multiple tasks efficiently.
  7. Proven capability to work collaboratively within a team structure.
  8. Demonstrated ability to work independently and successfully follow through on projects.
  9. Outstanding organizational skills to manage varied responsibilities effectively.
  10. Excellent proficiency in computer skills, including Microsoft Office Programs.
  11. Possession of a valid California Driver’s License and proof of insurance.
  12. Reliable transportation is a must and able to pass a Motor Vehicle Report from DMV.
