Job Description

SUMMARY:

Performs skilled and unskilled tasks in the maintenance of city-owned vehiclesand equipment as directed by the supervisor.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Includes the following and other duties as may be assigned –

Examines, analyzes, adjusts, and repairs all types of automotive vehicles and equipment such as:

  • Be able to check battery, charging system, starting system.
  • Ability to do tune-ups.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and service work on all types of automotive vehicles and equipment.
  • Replace vehicle and equipment components such as water pumps, alternators, starters, batteries, etc.
  • Ability to do tire repair, tire replacement and brake work.
  • Installs and removes defective parts on all types of automotive vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to fabricate, cut, and weld metal products.
  • May be required to operate City vehicles.
  • Perform other tasks and duties as determined by the supervisor.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma, or G.E.D is required.
  • Technical training in a related field is preferred.
  • Previous professional experience is not required, but the individual should possess considerable knowledge of practice, methods, tools, materials used, and diagnosis and repair in the maintenance of automotive vehicles and equipment.


LANGUAGE SKILLS:

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner to individuals in other departments and the divisions within the department.
  • Ability to write routine reports, logs and daily paperwork.

REASONING ABILITY:

  • The ability to apply basic logic or reason in routine and non-routine functions of operation, maintenance and automotive work.
  • The ability to implement and understand work hazards and applicable safety measures needed for the job.
  • Ability to deal with nonverbal symbols.
  • Ability to deal with abstract and concrete concepts. Identify, evaluate, and repair all functions of automotive vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to exercise initiative, resourcefulness, and experienced judgment in interpreting and applying guidelines as well as developing and recommending solutions to prove.


CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATION:

  • Maintain a valid Driver’s License from the State of Mississippi.
  • Technical certification in a related field is preferred.

STANDARD:

  • Employee will safely complete tasks within the required time specified forthe task in compliance with the standards established from the automotive manufacturers specifications catalogued in All Data Softwareand Motor Manuals.
  • Employee will complete the tasks within the requirements set by the Vehicle Maintenance Division Performance Rates Schedules.
  • Employee will complete task with 85% accuracy and quality.
  • Employee will safely and properly maintain all city tooling and equipment that is assigned to the employee or that is temporarily checked-out to the
  • employee.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving equipment; occasionally exposed to electrical power sources; regularly exposed to moderate to very loud noises.
  • The employee may be required to work outside in extreme weather conditions from rain and cold to extreme heat; is exposed to humid/wet conditions, fumes, airborne particles, vibrations, loud noises, mechanical parts and occasionally toxic chemicals.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the work may involve lifting, pulling, pushing, positioning or through the use of tools exerting up to 75 pounds of force occasionally (6-33% of the work day); and lifting, pulling, pushing, positioning or through the use of tools exerting up to 50 pounds of force frequently (34-66% 0f the work day).
  • The work may involve overhead work occasionally.
  • The work may involve standing, walking and bending at the waist frequently; and sitting, squatting, kneeling, crawling and climbing ladders, stairs or other means of equipment ingress and egress, and driving a standard motor vehicle.
  • The work may involve use of the hands for simple grasping, pushing, pulling and fine manipulation of objects, tools (including power tools), controls and equipment frequently, and repetitively occasionally.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
  • The employee is regularly required to talk and hear.
