Music Teacher and Choir for Grades 4-6

Salary: $45,000 per year, based on qualifications.

Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) Status:  Exempt Regular Full-Time 

Annual Days: 196

Job Position Product: Student understanding of music that furthers the development of character and intellect.


Bachelor’s degree, preferably in music education, with at least 36 semester hours in music courses or Praxis content exam


General Purpose: The Music teacher is responsible for providing students with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to develop academic excellence, virtue, and leadership.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Selects and requisitions music and instructional materials.
  • Teaches fourth grade general music based on the Core Knowledge Curriculum and recorders based on Essential Elements of Recorder Book 1. Teaches fifth and sixth grade choir using solfege as a tool for sight reading and choral repertoire as chosen by the teacher that enhances the instruction of basic music elements and healthy vocal technique.
  • Communicates with parents and department chair to discuss pupil progress.
  • Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned workday.
  • Upholds and implements school rules, administrative regulations, and board policy.
  • Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs as assigned.
  • Participates in faculty committees and sponsorship of pupil activities as assigned.
  • Teaches courses in music according to courses of study adopted by the Board of Education and through appropriate learning activities.
  • Teaches materials related to general appreciation and comprehension of music as well as to the learning of performance techniques in a chorus or general music classroom.
  • Presents the musical results of the instructional program in school assemblies and/or at concerts as arranged by the school’s principal.
  • Establishes a standard of musical excellence in each class and music performance group as assigned.
  • Instructs each assigned performance group. This includes the development of the musicianship of each pupil technically and interpretively as a vocalist, as an individual singer as well as a member of the chorus.
  • Maintains an inventory of books, music, and instruments. Recommendations for the replacement of these items are initiated when required by the teacher in charge of each choral or general music group.
  • Prepares a list of recommended contemporary music and teaching materials annually.
  • Positively represents the school and its mission to the students, parents, colleagues, and general public.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with school staff and administration.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as needed or assigned.
