Compensation: $18/hr

Term: May 20 - August 16, 2024, flexible

Expectation: 20-30 hours per week

Work Location: Hybrid work environment, with at least 2 days / week in office, 1730 Pennsylvania Ave NW

Description:

Interns at the Trust for the National Mall support the implementation of the Trust's goals and strategies by serving in one of the following focus areas: Communications, Philanthropy & Operations, or Programs & Projects. Interns will gain an understanding of the complex operations of a small nonprofit and will have the opportunity to participate in diverse projects while learning and gaining skills to support their career aspirations. While the focus areas give an overview of projects, incumbents may support work from other focus areas as interested and available.

Intern Focus Areas:

  1. Communications: As part of the Communications and Marketing team, the Communications intern will assist in the day-to-day management of the Trust's communications through digital and written content. The intern will work closely with the Communications and Marketing team to engage a broad audience with the Trust's mission. The intern will help support the following activations during the summer internship term: Fourth of July; anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom; receptions and donor events; other annual commemorations on the National Mall.
    1. Responsibilities: Generate social copy and design corresponding visuals; Track social engagement and compile analytics reports; Assist with building National Mall photo library; Compile a staff-wide news update; Implement content for monthly and special edition newsletters; Monitor media coverage and update media/reporter lists; Perform website updates; create webpages and research user experience; Develop content for external communication vehicles; Suggest and lead video projects or small-scale social campaigns with content captured during National Mall site visits; and Assist in event preparation
  2. Operations & Philanthropy: The Operations & Philanthropy intern will work closely with the Operations and Philanthropy Operations teams. On the Philanthropy end, the intern will support the day-to-day fundraising activities of the Philanthropy team. The internship will provide an opportunity to build a background in a variety of fundraising activities, from research and prospecting, donor management software, and more. On the Operations end, the intern will support the tactical operations of the Trust providing support on special projects across a range of topic areas from data management and human resources to office management.
    1. Responsibilities: donor research and prospecting (training will be provided); supporting data entry and hygiene in Salesforce (training will be provided); special events assistance; donor stewardship/correspondence support; compiling and organizing job descriptions; assisting with file cleanup of the Trust SharePoint site; and potential assistance with an organization office move.
  3. Programs & Projects: The Programs & Projects intern will work with the teams on covering "on the Mall" needs, specifically at the US Park Police Horse Stables and Education Center, Lockkeeper's House, and other priority sites across the Mall. The intern will be integral to ensuring Trust for the National Mall sites are staffed, well cared for, and are engaging places for the public. This work may include developing maintenance plans, staffing sites and public events, and assisting in exhibit planning and installation.
    1. Responsibilities: developing maintenance plans and schedules for project sites; researching creative opportunities for long-term site care; working on the planning, development, and execution of exhibits to engage visitors with priority sites; supporting the execution of public programs; staffing Trust priority sites on the National Mall including the US Park Police Horse Stables and Education Center and the Lockkeeper's House.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current college student or within 1 year of graduating.
  • Able to commit at least 20 hours / week during normal office hours (Monday - Friday). Occasional weekend or evening availability may be required.
  • Able to work in person at the Trust for the National Mall office at least 2 days per week.
  • Able to work independently in a fast-paced environment, take initiative, and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in MS Office applications.
  • Strong connection to the Trust for the National Mall mission, our National Parks, and your preferred focus area.
