Job Description: Chemical Engineer with subject matter expertise in Trace Contaminant removal or Air Filtration technologies.

Paragon is looking for an experienced/mid-career level Chemical engineer with subject matter expertise in Trace Contaminant and/or Carbon Dioxide removal, especially in support of air revitalization/filtration technologies in human-crewed spaceflight applications. This individual would help develop new Air Revitalization systems for Environmental Control Life Support System (ECLSS) hardware for current and future, commercial and government, customers. It's an exciting opportunity to qualify new spacecraft designs or research ideas and then follow it through design, test, build and flight.

The successful candidate will report to the Director of Engineering and be responsible for the design, development, and test of Trace contaminant removal systems related to ECLSS systems for future space suits or habitats. Additionally, this candidate must provide or facilitate (with other experts) accurate modeling of their subsystem and related environments, oversee the design and manufacture of hardware, conduct test planning to verify performance, and develop the systems through flight qualification.

Locations preferences are Tucson, AZ, Denver, CO and Houston, TX. Hybrid or remote options will be considered for the right candidate. This determination will be reached during interviews.

Expected skills and job responsibilities comprise:

  • Knowledge of air quality control technologies, especially for indoor or closed environments
  • Molecular air filtration
  • Particulate filtration
  • CO2 capture and storage
  • Experience with trace contaminant control hardware for human spacecraft
  • Experience with chemical characterization methodology and equipment (gas phase characterization like FTIR, mass spectroscopy, etc)
  • Familiarity with requirements of the space environment and impacts to air quality control hardware
  • Data processing, modeling, and analysis using MATLAB, Octave, EES, Python, or similar
  • Knowledge and experience with highly technical systems, subsystems, assemblies, and/or components.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in both written and spoken form
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective, positive work relationships; have creativity, flexibility and resourcefulness; have discriminating judgment, tact and sense of humor
  • Skill in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Visio, Project)
  • Independently and/or in a team environment:
    • Generate formal documentation such as technical memorandums, analysis reports, design and development books, or product manuals
    • Create and/or review system schematics and engineering drawings.
  • Lead a 2-5 person team and execute a small independent research project while achieving the technical scope on budget and on schedule
  • Interface and manage relationships with customers and suppliers to present technical and programmatic progress and as well as challenges that must be overcome

U.S. Citizenship or permanent resident status is required for this position.

Required Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical, Aerospace Engineering or equivalent field and 6+ years with contaminant removal, air filtration, chemical analysis and/or hardware design experience
  • Master's degree in Mechanical, Bio-mechanical, Aerospace Engineering or equivalent field and 3-4 years with contaminant removal, air filtration, chemical analysis and/or hardware design experience
  • PhD degree in Mechanical, Bio-mechanical, Aerospace Engineering or equivalent field and contaminant removal, air filtration, chemical analysis and/or hardware design experience
