Job Description

JOB TITLE: Mechanical Engineer II

REPORTS TO: Engineering Manager

DEPARTMENT: Engineering

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

OVERVIEW

The Mechanical Engineer II is responsible for designing and sustaining for the Mobile and Industrial Safety product lines, including wireless communication equipment, fiber splicing vehicles, fall arrest/rescue and retrieval equipment, ventilation, manhole support, and work tents.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Function as a liaison between sales and engineering.
  • Draft documents, 3D design layouts, markups, plans and drawings; validate drawings, design details, or specifications for accuracy.
  • Coordinate design and drafting work; create, design and recommend design changes as needed, working with sales and fabrication.
  • Prepare plans, detailed drawings, diagrams, specifications, and other required data.
  • Plot, scan, digitize, and issue drawings. Ensure all drawings are created according to established Pelsue, customer, industry, and third-party standards.
  • Assist in planning and coordinating design documentation.
  • Work closely with sales, customer service, fabrication, assembly, procurement, and production and quality assurance personnel to facilitate all planned work, and work in process.
  • Responsible for new product design, testing and any required certifications for all engineering production output.
  • Generates, discusses and maintains components design proposals with internal departments balancing need to customer specification with manufacturing/cost implications.
  • Performs work which involves conventional engineering practices, but includes a variety of complex features, such as conflicting design requirements, non-standard materials and difficult coordination requirements.
  • Participates in and promotes process improvements within assigned areas.
  • Creates detail designs using 2D and 3D drafting including dimensioning and tolerancing.
  • Documents/archives/retrieves drawings from storage system.
  • Creates and maintains BOMs, releases drawings.
  • Competent use and understanding of FEA tools, basic use of DFSS tools and methodologies; competent knowledge of Engineering quality systems (PLC, engineering change, configuration management).

COMPENTENCIES

  • Ability to operate in a service/support and manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to follow engineering procedures, metrics and standards.
  • Experience using SOLIDWORKS 3D modeling software and ANSYS FEA software preferred.
  • Knowledge of basic fabrication and machining drafting principles, techniques and procedures, construction methods and components is a plus.
  • Personal Effectiveness/Credibility & Ethical Conduct.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has limited supervisory responsibilities.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will work primarily in an office and indoor plant setting, although outdoor work may be necessary from time to time, based upon project scope.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls, and to reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to stand, climb in and out of vehicles, talk and hear.

POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK This is a full-time position. Standard days and hours of work while in the office are Monday through Friday, 7:30AM a.m. to 4:00PM, with a half hour lunch.

TRAVEL

Some travel to industry tradeshows and events, customer site visits, vendor partners and other travel may be required.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, LANGUAGE, AND EXPERIENCE

3-5 years experience in a similar field/manufacturing environment. Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent discipline is required. A valid driver's license and a clean MVR is preferred. Ability to pass a post-offer background check.
