MobilizeGreen seeks a conservation-minded Data Specialist Resource Assistant to serve 32 weeks with the Daniel Boone National Forest. The Resource Assistant (RA) will join an active GIS Shop supporting interdisciplinary work across the Daniel Boone National Forest. The RA will assist on a variety of tasks as they pertain to database management, geospatial support, web GIS and mobile data collection. The position will be working closely with personnel across multiple resource areas primarily supporting Forest programs in engineering, recreation, lands and special uses.


The Resource Assistants Program is designed for recent graduates and new professionals to launch their natural and cultural resources careers. The RA will receive hands-on learning experience, mentorship, and coaching to complete mission-critical work while developing leadership, critical thinking, and strategic communication skills. This is a developmental program.

Location: Daniel Boone National Forest


Term: 32 weeks, starting July 15, 2024, Full-time (40hrs/week)


Duty Station: Winchester, KY

Position Duties: 

  • Work closely with the Forest GIS Program to gain an understanding of geospatial best practices with the Forest Service. Gaining an understanding of Forest Service GIS resources and applications, navigating the FS network environment, learning important workflows, etc.
  • Data Stewardship Projects: Potential work includes collaborating with local subject matter experts to understand data assets and database standards, becoming familiar with the Forest Service’s Infrastructure application, learning quality control processes and new QC tools, and editing data in geospatial and tabular databases.
  • Geospatial Projects: Potential work could include setting up a geospatial project directories, compiling and organizing GIS data, working closely with specialists answering questions and providing GIS support, creating cartographic products, performing geospatial analysis, documenting workflows, etc. Other special projects could include setting up mobile GIS projects, improving data collection products and workflows or building ArcGIS Online forms and apps.
  • Field Projects: Support field work such as performing road and trail condition surveys, training users in the use of Field Maps and Survey 123 and gathering rapid assessment data.
  • Other duties as assigned that utilize the knowledge and creativity you bring to this position.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or certificate (or pursuing a degree) in engineering, engineering technician, geographic information systems, natural resources, recreation or other related disciplines appropriate to the position 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of database management practices and tools and GIS concepts and methodologies
  • Basic oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to learn efficiently and put new skills into practice
  • Ability to effectively convey information to individuals or groups, taking into account the nature of the information (e.g., technical)
  • Ability to work well independently (self-motivated) and as part of a team


Work Environment

The work involves both office and field work and ranges from sedentary to strenuous. Field work requires physical exertion such as walking over wet and rough surfaces.
